Carl Matter, age 76, of Cavour, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 8, 2021, at his home.

His funeral service was held at 10:30 AM, Monday, December 13th, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Iroquois. Burial followed in the church's cemetery with military honors by the Bensley-Rounds Post #280 Iroquois American Legion.

Carl Albert Matter was born February 23, 1945, to Earl and Velma (Burma) Matter on the farm, rural Cavour, South Dakota. He grew up on the family farm, working with his family and actively participating in 4-H.

After graduating from Iroquois High School in 1963, he was drafted into the United States Army in 1965. He honorably served his country domestically during the Vietnam War era.

After completing his active-duty obligations, he was an International Farm Youth Exchange (IFYE) participant living with host farm families in Venezuela and Costa Rica. He made many lifetime friends and memories through the program.

On August 17, 1985, Carl married the love of his life, Linda Tekrony, at Clear Lake, South Dakota. Together they made their home in rural Cavour. To this union, joined one son, Brent Matter.

Carl was a longtime member of the Bensley-Rounds Post #280 Iroquois American Legion. He was also an active member and Sunday school teacher at Immanuel Lutheran Church. He loved farming and gardening, skills he acquired from his parents. He was passionate about his job as a rural letter carrier for the United States Postal Service. He loved handing out candy to anyone with a sweet tooth. He was the epitome of the mailman, going the extra mile no matter the conditions.

Thankful and blessed to have shared in Carl's life are his beloved wife, Linda Matter of Cavour; one son, Brent Matter of Vermillion, South Dakota; one sister-in-law, Connie Matter of Wausau, Wisconsin; one brother-in-law, Larry (Jean) Winkelman of Watertown, South Dakota; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Velma Matter; twin sister, Carol; and siblings, Vern and Janet.
