Wesley High Elk, Jr., age 48, of Huron and formerly of Eagle Butte,died Saturday, October 29, 2016, at the Huron Regional Medical Center. His funeral service will be at 1:00 PM,Friday, November 4th at the Kuhler Funeral Home. Burial will be in the St. Peter's Episcopal Cemetery at Thunder Butte at a later date. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the Kuhler Funeral Home.
Wesley High Elk, Jr. was born March 12, 1968, to Wesley and Imogene (Clown) High Elk at Eagle Butte. He attended school at Eagle Butte and Ft. Thompson until he was six. He was stung by a bee and in a coma for 6 years. After coming out of the coma he was in a care facility in Redfield and Custer. Then he moved to Huron in 1986. He was a member of the Center for Independence. Wesley had lived in his present home for over 18 years and had a great relationship with those in the house that moved in with him.
Wesley was proud of his Native American heritage. He enjoyed listening to Native American music and watching videos about Native American history. He enjoyed going to and watching basketball games. Wesley liked spending his time outside.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Leslie, in September of 1979 and his brother, Eugene, in February of 1980.
Grateful for having shared his life are one sister, Raylene Iron Lightning-High Elk of Eagle Butte; a niece, Justine R. High Elk of Eagle Butte; three nephews, Jacob West, Duane West and Davey West, all of Eagle Butte; and twelve grandchildren; Madisyn DuBray, Kylan, Kristyn and Chael West, Davyn, Dominik and D'Keira West, and McKenzie, Angelique, Santos, Duane and Selena West.
Wesley's family is incredibly grateful to the staff at the Center of Independence for the wonderful care Wesley received while in their care. Most recently, John Cain, Hilary Jensen, Nancy Rissmann, Callyann Wallenstein, Christine Snyder, Nidia Avilez, Lois Dening, Alayne Rowcliffe, Alexis McEnelly, Stephanie Mastel, Jennifer Sederstrom, Char Hvidsten and many staff throughout the years that have worked and enjoyed working with Wesley.
