Virginia E. Hofer, age 89, of Huron, passed away Friday, December 8, 2017, at the Huron Regional Medical Center. Her memorial service was held at 7:00 PM Thursday, December 14th, at Huron First Assembly of God Church. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery.
Virginia Eva Holly was born July 10, 1928, to Rufus and Louisa (Huether) Holly at Sanborn County, South Dakota. She attended Gettysburg High School and graduated from Huron College in 1953 earning her teacher certification. In 1961, she graduated with a Bachelor's degree from Evangel College in Springfield, Missouri and later earned a Master's degree from the University of Minnesota in 1969. Virginia dedicated over 50 years to her teaching career, beginning her career in Huron from 1953 to 1956. She taught in the St. Paul School District from 1961 to 1977. Virginia returned to Huron and continued teaching from 1978 to 1981 and then James Valley Christian School from 1982 to 1989.She finished her teaching career for the Huron School District from 1989 until retirement.
On June 2, 1948, Virginia married Kenneth Eugene Hofer at the Huron First Assembly of God Church. Kenneth was tragically killed on August 29, 1951, while working as a brakeman for the railroad.
Virginia was an active member of Huron First Assembly of God Church, serving as a Sunday School teacher, teacher training instructor, organist, choir member, Christian education board member, and Deacon board member. Virginia's students in school and at church, became her own. She saved their artwork, prayed for them and took an interest in their lives and activities. She played the role of grandma to so many of them, remembering birthdays and other special events. Virginia loved putting together albums documenting her teaching career, treasuring each photo from students, and kept albums from her church activities.
She is survived by her nieces, Dixie Hofer Pengra, Lori Hofer Willuweit, Jodi Hofer Koester and Kelly Hofer Merchen; a nephew, Wm Hofer; and her Huron First Assembly of God Church family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Kenneth Hofer; her infant brother, Rufus Holly; her brother, Russell Holly at age 21; and her brother-in-law, Bruce Hofer.
Virginia passed away Friday, December 8, 2017, at the Huron Regional Medical Center, at the age of 89 years, 4 months, and 29 days.
