Obituary

Victor Schneider, age 95, of Huron, passed away Sunday, August 5, 2018, at the SunQuest Health Care Center. His funeral service was held at 10:30 AM, Wednesday, August 8th at the Bethesda Church. Burial was in the Bethesda Section of Ideal Cemetery with military honors by the Huron Veterans Council.
Victor Christian Schneider was born October 21, 1922, to Otto and Euginia (Kraft) Schneider at Scotland, South Dakota. He was baptized and confirmed by Rev. Green at the German Congregational Church. He attended school at Scotland.
On September 24, 1944, Victor married Ida V. Neuharth at Menno.
Victor was inducted into the U.S. Army on March 7, 1945, at Fort Snelling, Minnesota. He completed basic training at Camp Hood. In July of 1945, he received orders that he would be going to Japan. He was sent to Camp Adair near Albany, Oregon to prepare for the pending Allied invasion of Japan. Before he was deployed, Japan surrendered.
He was then stationed in the Philippine Islands where he served at Luzon for nine months. His main responsibility there was serving as a guard. The biggest risk was Japanese soldiers from the nearby hillsides sneaking into the Army base at night to steal food from the dumpsters, because they were starving and had not received word of Japan's surrender.
He was honorably discharged on Memorial Day, May 30, 1946 about which he said, "what a day to remember!"
They farmed most of their married life in the Alpena and Huron area. They also lived a short time in Oregon. In addition to farming, Victor was employed by the Armour Packing Plant. They moved to Huron in 1996.
Victor accepted Christ as his Savior at a revival meeting in the German Congregational Church at age 16. He was later baptized as an adult in 1994. He was a member of the Bethesda Church of Huron. His life time church work consisted of teaching Sunday school, being a member of the church council, and serving as church treasurer. Victor also served as a member of the Grant Township School Board.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ida, on July 2, 2003; his parents; his step-mother, Anna (Wurz) Schneider; two brothers, LeRoy Schneider and Melvin and Faye Schneider; one sister, Ruby and Helmuth Ochsner; one nephew; and one niece.
Grateful for having shared his life are his three children and their spouses, Lynn and Gloria Schneider of Huron, Ardyce and Jim Hill of Knox City, Texas and Rick and Angie Schneider of Sioux City, Iowa; eight grandchildren, Brent and Vicky Schneider, Jon and Ann Schneider, Aaron and Sheila Schneider, Robb and Nannett Hill, Michelle and Jim Childs, Eric and Gina Hill, Nick and Kathy Schneider and Christie and Stuart Ness; eighteen great-grandchildren, Jake, Abbie and Julia Schneider, Sydney, Owen and Cooper Schneider, Alexander and Lincoln Schneider, Kaitlyn and Cori Hill, Dalton Kiser, Cody Childs, Dean and Curyn Hill, Cara and Connor Schneider and Travis and David Ness; and one sister-in-law, Beverly Schneider of Nampa, Idaho.
