Vernon C. Timperley, age 92, of Huron, passed away Wednesday, May 31, 2017, at Cherrywood Assisted Living in St. Cloud, Minnesota. His memorial service washeld at 1:30 PM, Saturday, June 3rd at the First United Methodist Church in Huron, with military honors conducted by the Huron Veterans Council. Burial was held at 11 AM Saturday June 3rd, at the Riverside Cemetery.
Vernon Clair Timperley was born on September 15, 1924, to Albert and Esther (Ingle) Timperley. He grew up in Huron graduating from Huron High School in 1943. After graduation he entered the Army Air Force in July 1943, and served until February 1946. When he returned from the service he was employed by Chicago Northwestern railroad as a fireman and a Locomotive Engineer. He retired in June 1987 after 41 years of service.
He married Shirley Best on September 12, 1949, in Pierre, South Dakota. They made their home in Huron. Shirley passed away March 3, 2001. On July 6, 2002, he married Kathleen Melstad of Huron.
Vernon was a member of First United Methodist Church, American Legion, United Transportation Union and an active volunteer for Meals on Wheels.
He is survived by: his two children, Steven (Cindy) Timperley of Deerfield, IL and Debra (Joe Byrne) Timperley of St. Cloud, MN; Kathy's children, Mike (Marilyn Meinke) Melstad of Red Wing, MN, Kim (Galen) Waldner of Carpenter, SD and Robin (Martin) Jarrett of Madison, SD; fourteen grandchildren, Jeffrey (Jacquie) Timperley of Maple Grove ,MN, Amy Timperley of Wheaton, IL, Danielle Byrne of St. Cloud, MN, Steven Byrne of St. Cloud, MN, Chris (Joan Bennett) McCartney-Melstad of Boston, MA, Anna McCartney-Melstad of Abuja, Nigeria, Austin (Lis DeSaussure) McCartney-Melstad of Springfield, VA, Evan (Cat Reibel) McCartney-Melstad of Los Angeles, CA, Sara (Mark) Trampe of Omaha, NE, Kristin (Tim) Bauslaugh of Spearfish, SD, Katie (Erik) Lohmann of Sioux Falls, SD, Alison (Samuel) Williams of London, England, Nick (Caitlin Iverson) Jarrett of Chaska, MN, and Stephanie Jarret of San Marcos, TX; fourteen great-grandchildren, Sawyer Timperley, Wyatt Timperley, Maxwyl Timperley, Owyn Timperley, Lewys Timperley, Zakkary (James) Pullis, Ryder McCartney-Melstad, Annie McCartney-Melstad, Eleanor McCartney-Melstad, Donovan Trampe, Vivian Trampe, Malachi Bauslaugh, Ainsley Bauslaugh and Vera Lohman.
Vernon was preceded in death by his first wife, Shirley; his second wife, Kathy; his parents; brother, Laurence Timperley; and sister, Lorena Geyerman.
