Vernon Neuharth, age 95, of Wolsey, SD, passed away Sunday, February 18, 2024 at Avantara Huron.
His funeral service was held at 10:30 AM, Saturday, February 24, at the First Presbyterian Church, Wolsey. Burial followed in the Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery. Military honors were conducted by the Hershman-Gordon American Legion Post #59, Wolsey. His service was live-streamed.
His visitation was held from 3:00 to 6:00 PM, Friday, February 23, at the Kuhler Funeral Home, with his family present from 4:00 to 6:00 PM Friday evening. A prayer service was held at 6:00 PM Friday evening.
Vernon Ervin Neuharth was born February 5, 1929, to Emanuel and Martha (Goehring) Neuharth, on the family farm. He attended school through the 8th grade, when he had to quit school to help his mom raise his three sisters. Vernon lived in Yale as a boy before moving to Huron where he joined the United States Army and served during the Korean War era. He was honorably discharged on October 23, 1952.
On November 8, 1953, Vernon married Ardeth Parker at the First Presbyterian Church in Huron. They made their home on the family farm in the Wolsey area.
Vernon was a member of AMPI and served as director for a number of years. He was also active in the Farm Bureau. Vernon served as the Vernon Township Supervisor for many years and on the Beadle County Conservation Board. Vernon was also an active member of both the Wolsey American Legion and the VFW.
He loved farming and did it all of his life. Vernon enjoyed the time he spent with his family, especially his grandchildren. He was also a skilled pool player winning the State C Division 8-Ball Tournament.
He was preceded in death by one son, Jeffrey in 1963; his parents; his wife in 2008; and two sisters, Gladys Leek and Norma Wenz.
Grateful for having shared in his life are his five children, Donald (Lenore) Neuharth of Camdenton, MO; Larry (Kristi) Neuharth of Wolsey, Steve (Vicki) Neuharth of Wolsey, Glenda Crandall of Wolsey and Jean (Darrell) Wharton of Huron; 13 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; one sister, Frances Duncan of Everett, Washington; and many nieces and nephews.
