Obituary

Verna J. Schock, age 87, of Silvis, Illinois and formerly of Huron, passed away March 17, 2023, after a long illness, at her home surrounded by her family by her side.

A private graveside service with military honors will be held at the Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery, at a later date.

Verna was born in 1935, to Herman and Ella Kuhfeld and was raised on the family farm. She was confirmed at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Warner, South Dakota. She graduated from Warner High School.

Verna proudly served in the Marine Corp for ninety days, before being honorably discharged.

On September 12, 1954, Verna married Arnold T. Schock, at the Warner St. Paul's Lutheran Church. The young couple started their lives together at Aberdeen, South Dakota, where Arnold attended college at Northern State University, where he received his teaching degree.

After Arnold's graduation, he and Verna moved to Hosmer, South Dakota, where Arnold accepted a teaching position. Verna and Arnold had five children, Janice, Bernadine, William, Tammy and Larry. Arnold's teaching career led the Schock family to different locations such as Kellogg, Idaho, Belcourt, North Dakota with the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Forbes, North Dakota, Wessington, South Dakota and eventually Huron, South Dakota, where they resided until Arnold's death in 2002.

On October 7, 2006, Verna married Lewis Becker.

Verna worked at Raven's Regional Airport and enjoyed babysitting. Her favorite hobbies were bowling and embroidery. She loved having coffee with friends. Verna was a member of the Baptist Church in Huron.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Janice; son, Larry; sisters, Delores and Hazel; brothers, Ervin, Edward, Melvin and an infant brother whose name was never disclosed; her parents, Herman and Ella; and her two husbands, Arnold Schock and Lewis Becker.

She is survived by her children, Bernadine (Randy) Martin, William (Aweont) Schock and Tammy (Jim) Claymore; one sister, Elvera; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.
