Verl Dionne Flanery, 90, Rapid City, died Sunday, March 2, 2025 at St. Martin Village, Rapid City.
A memorial service was held at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, April 5, at Kuhler Funeral Home, Huron. Visitation was a half hour beforehand. Burial was in the Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery, Huron. The service was live-streamed .
Verl was born to Charles J. and Gladys (Brown) Stewart, on July 23,1934, in her parent's home, in Willow Lake, SD. She graduated from Brookings High School and she met her husband, John (Jack) Flanery, while he attended SDSU.
She raised her family in Huron for most of her life and moved to Rapid City in 2014. She spent +40 years managing Eiler's Furs in Huron for her lifelong friends, Bill & Barbara Eilers. Verl taught at Northwest College of Commerce for several years and was involved in PEO and the Huron Chamber of Commerce. The best times of her life were at the family's Nine Mile Lake cabin near Lake City, SD. She enjoyed listening to her favorite musicians, Willie Nelson, Elton John, Barbara Streisand, Tony Bennett and Frank Sinatra. She was a voracious reader and always had a book in her hands.
Verl is survived by her sons, Steve (Mary Helen) Rapid City, Brian (Susan) Overland Park, KS and Charles, C.J. (Stacy) West Fargo, ND, her grandchildren, Michael (Courtney) Flanery, Louisburg, KS, Steven (Jenna) Flanery, Overland Park, KS, Mary Beth (Marcos) Munoz, Rapid City, Stewart Flanery, Rapid City, Shannon (Blake) Flanery, West Fargo, ND and Kelsey (Max) Baumgartner, Horace, ND, Eric (Beth) Gustafson, Shawnee, KS, and 12 great grandchildren. She is survived by two sisters, Charlys (Ronald) Randall, Mitchell, SD and Charon (Vern) Andersen, Spearfish, SD. She is also survived by many wonderful nephews and nieces, especially Vicki, Sherri, Carla, Mary Kay and Cindy, her cousin, Mary Mitchell and very special friend, Ruth Ann Karlen.
Verl's daughter, Elizabeth Dionne, her parents Charles and Gladys Stewart and her husband, Jack, and great-grandson, Christopher, preceded her in death.
Memorials may be directed to Feeding South Dakota, Youth & Family Services in Rapid City, or to the Jan Manolis Family Safe Center (women & children's shelter) in Huron.
