IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Timothy
Kennedy
February 17, 1953 – November 6, 2025
Tim Kennedy, age 72, of Huron, was called home by the Lord on Thursday, November 6, 2025, while at the Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls. He now proudly flies among the angels in Heaven.
Timothy Allen Kennedy was born on February 17, 1953, to James "Jim" and Patricia "Pat" (Shaughnessy) Kennedy in Tucson, Arizona. His father's service in the Air Force led Tim and family to call many places "home," including New York, France, Mississippi, Arizona, and Florida. The second of four children — and the younger of two boys — Tim had a mischievous streak that would extend into adulthood, playfully keeping the rest of the family on their toes.
In 1971 Tim joined the United States Army, flying helicopters with the 101st Airborne Division. While stationed at Fort Campbell, he met the sister of a fellow pilot, and she became the love of his life. He married Camille Matlock on December 12, 1975. The couple welcomed a daughter, Catherine, in 1981, and a son, Tim Jr., in 1984.
Following his honorable discharge from the Army in 1976, Tim trained with the FAA in Missouri to become an air traffic controller. He later worked for a Texas oilfield company, flying workers and equipment to offshore rigs in the Gulf of Mexico. In 1989, the family moved to Huron, South Dakota when Tim began flying for Western Area Power Administration, and the family have made Huron their home for more than 35 years.
Tim was endlessly devoted to his family, and was a beloved father, son, grandfather, brother, and uncle. He cherished spending his retirement years with Camille and treasured time spent with his four grandchildren. He also enjoyed tinkering on motorcycles and cars, especially Volkswagens, and cheering for the Green Bay Packers.
He had a lifelong passion for flying, and his multi-generational heritage in aviation was a prominent part of his life and identity. Tim was known to many by the nickname "Tango," a nod to his first initial's representation in the NATO phonetic alphabet. His long service and reputation as a skilled pilot—with over 15,000 flight hours—remains a source of great pride for his family, particularly among his children and grandchildren.
Tim was preceded in death by father, Jim.
Grateful for having shared in his life are his wife, Camille Kennedy; his mother, Pat Kennedy; his daughter, Catherine (Ryan) Johnson; his son, Timothy Allen Kennedy, Jr.; his grandchildren, Laney Johnson, Norah Kennedy, Fiona Kennedy and Waylon Johnson; and his siblings, Jim (Mary) Kennedy, Kim (Bob) Bouffard and Maureen (Denny) Feeney; and multiple nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend its profound gratitude to Tim's care team at Sanford USD Medical Center. Their care, compassion and support were deeply impactful and appreciated during a very difficult time. The family would also like to thank the staff at Huron Regional Medical Center for the care they provided.
The family will hold a private memorial at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Tim's honor may be directed to the Sanford Health Foundation.
