Thelma Arwood, 96, died Thursday, May 7, 2015, at the Huron Regional Medical Center. Her memorial service was at 10 AM, Saturday, August 8, 2015, at the First Baptist Church with Rev. Marc Anderson, officiating. Burial was in the Spirit Lake German Cemetery near De Smet.
Thelma Hilda Sprang was born June 11, 1918, near Bancroft, South Dakota, to Henry and Hilda (Harty) Sprang. The family moved to Willow Lake, South Dakota in 1920. She graduated from Willow Lake High School in 1936.
On April 28, 1939, Thelma married Vernon "Bud" Arwood. The couple lived in Redfield, Volga and De Smet before moving to Huron in 1945. Thelma worked 16 years for the Huron High School Food Service and retired in 1983. After retirement, the Arwoods enjoyed winter months in the Texas Rio Grande Valley.
Thelma was a member of the First Baptist Church of Huron, the American Legion Auxilliary, 8 and 40, the VFW Auxilliary and the Huron Area Senior Center.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband in 2007.
Grateful for having shared in her life are her daughter, Monya (Bill) Peters of Friendswood, Texas; two sons, Lowell (Marilyn) Arwood and Jeff (Mary) Arwood, all of Fairfax Station, Virginia; 10 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
