Scott Ramsell, age 73, of Huron, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, April 12, 2023.
His funeral service was held at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, April 18 at the First United Methodist Church. His service was live-streamed through our website.
His visitation was held from 1:00 to 7:00 PM Monday, April 17 at the Kuhler Funeral Home, with his family present from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Monday evening.
Scott Alan Ramsell was born July 6, 1949, to Paul and Ila (Baum) Ramsell at St. John's Hospital at Huron. He grew up on the farm northeast of Huron, where the family operated a dairy farm. Scott attended grade school at Valley Township School through the 8th grade. He then attended Huron High School and graduated in 1967.
Scott continued his education at South Dakota State University for two years and then returned home to help with the family. Later, Scott attended Huron College for one year. Scott's dad passed away in 1991 and the family stopped the dairy farm in 1994. Scott tried the feed business for a while and then went to work as an insurance agent for Farm Bureau for the next 26 years. He retired in 2021.
In 1970, Scott married Jeannette Stoley and to that union three daughters were born. They divorced in 1994.
In 1998, Scott met Cathy Thomas and they were married in 2000. They would have celebrated their 23rd wedding anniversary on June 27, 2023.
Scott had many hobbies. He played fast pitch softball for years, golfed at the Huron Country Club, and snowmobiled. He hunted pheasant, deer, elk and he fished. Scott loved to travel and made many trips to the Black Hills with Cathy. He did extensive traveling with friends to Florida, Mexico, Jamaica, St. Thomas VI and took a houseboat trip on the Mississippi River where he found his passion for the next 17 years. He and Cathy purchased a cabin cruiser and spent many summer weekends on the Missouri River at Cedar Shore Resort at Chamberlain.
Scott has had atrial fibrillation since he was 45, and his heart just quit working on April 12, 2023.
Scott was preceded in death by his grandparents, Art and Ethel Ramsell and Fred and Edith Baum; his parents, Paul and Ila Ramsell; his step-father, Mac Haskell; and one brother-in-law, Ron Kimball.
He leaves behind his wife, Cathy of Huron; three daughters and their husbands, Stacie and Mark Hallenbeck of Warner, Holly and Jason Sebern of Brookings and Tara and Marc Caplan of Temecula, California; and six grandchildren, Brady (Erin) Hallenbeck of Queen Creek, Arizona, Kade (fiance, Gina) Hallenbeck, of Fargo, North Dakota, Patrick (friend, Amanda) Hallenbeck, of Huron, Brooke Piearson of Sioux Falls, Ayla Caplan and Max Caplan, both of Temecula, California.
From his marriage to Cathy, he leaves behind two step-children, Brian and Jessica Hawley of New Market, Minnesota and Stephanie Hawley Rahder of Aberdeen; three step-grandchildren, Paige Hawley, Corinne Hawley and Hailey Rahder.
Scott also leaves behind one sister, Sondra Kimball of Sioux Falls; one brother, Douglas and Jane Ramsell of Huron; one aunt, Betty Fuehrer of Huron; and his nieces, nephews and cousins.
