Ruth Herzberg, age 96, of Huron, died Thursday, February 4, 2016, at the Violet Tschetter Memorial Home. Her funeral was held at the First Presbyterian Church at 2:00 PM on Saturday, February 6th, with Rev. Andrew Crandall, officiating. Burial was in the Riverside Cemetery.
Ruth was born on October 11, 1919, at Wessington, South Dakota, to Herman "Dick" and Mary (Metcalfe) Ackerman. She grew up in the Wessington area and attended the Sand Creek School. She graduated from Huron College and became an elementary school teacher.
On December 12, 1948, Ruth married Norman Herzberg at the First Presbyterian Church in Huron. Following their marriage they farmed near Bonilla until they retired and moved to Huron in 1989. She enjoyed traveling and visited all 50 states with her husband.
Ruth's hobbies included reading, painting and genealogy societies.She was a member of the Metcalfe Society of England, the David Ackerman Society, the Eddy Society, Civil War Daughters, South Dakota Education Association and the South Dakota Retired Teachers Association. Ruth was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband Norman on August 15, 2010.
Survivors include her sister-in-law, Lois McGlothlen of Bridgewater; a nephew, Roger Johnston of Bridgewater; cousins, Caroline Furman of Britton, Elaine Rider of St. Louis Park, Minnesota and Roxanne Jensen of Groton; and special friends, Verlin and Susie Tollefson of Hitchcock.
