Dr. Robert Johnson, age 84, of Huron, passed away Friday, March 13, 2020, at Avantara of Huron.

His funeral service will be 10:00 AM, Friday, March 20th, at the Kuhler Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery.

Robert Dean Johnson was born July 28, 1935, to William and Loraine (Bohls) Johnson at Watertown. He grew up in Watertown, graduating from Watertown High School in 1953. Robert continued his education and graduated from the University of South Dakota in 1957 with a B.S. Degree and from Southern California College of Optometry in 1960 and his Doctor of Optometry in 1961.

On March 29, 1961, Robert married Dorothy Pearson at the Frank Lloyd Wright Glass Chapel in Palos Verdas, California. They moved to Huron, November 1961, and began his practice of Optometry until he retired on December 2013.

He was a member of Kiwanis Club and the Huron Church of the Open Bible where he served as an elder. Professional associations of Robert's included President of the South Dakota Vision Service Corporation 1964 through 1972, President of the SD Optometric Society in 1975, board member to the North Central States Optometric Council 1974 to 1975, and secretary to the South Dakota Board of Examiners of Optometry from 1982 to 1987.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Dorothy; and his brother, Larry Johnson.

Robert is survived by his three sons, Douglas Johnson of Sioux Falls, Craig Johnson (Agatha) of Sioux Falls and Michael Johnson of Huron, two grandchildren, Matthew Johnson and Michelle Johnson; four step-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; and one brother, Russell Johnson of Arizona.
