Robert Halter, age 86, of Sioux Falls and formerly of Huron, passed away Saturday, April 15, 2023, at Avera McKennan Hospital at Sioux Falls.
His Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10:00 AM, Saturday, April 22, at Holy Trinity Catholic Parish. Interment followed in the St. Martin's Cemetery. Military honors were conducted by the Huron Veterans Council. His service was live-streamed through our website.
Visitation was held from 4:00 to 7:00 PM, Friday, April 21 at the Kuhler Funeral Home, with his family present from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. A time of sharing was held at 6:30 PM Friday evening. Watch the Time of Sharing.
Robert (Bob) Lee Halter was born July 6, 1936, to Henry and Marie (Connor) Halter in Huron, South Dakota. He attended St. Teresa Catholic School and graduated from Huron High School in 1955. He joined the South Dakota National Guard in 1954 and remained a member until 1965. While in the guards, he attended a semester at Springfield College, worked for the Chevrolet dealership and Messer's Garage.
Bob met Cecelia "Cel" Nelson in 1960 and they married in 1961 in Oldham. To this union, they were blessed with four children.
He went to work for Sears in Huron in 1966, as a service technician and then later service manager until the store closed in 1983. He then, along with his wife, started his own business, Central Service. While working at Sears, he also farmed with his father east of Huron. In 1989, they moved the business, along with their house from east of Huron to south of Huron. Bob also spent many years working with Myron Mecham on various projects, but most importantly was the honey bee operation at Virgil, South Dakota. Bob sold Central Service in 2010, and worked just heating and cooling until 2015, when he retired.
Bob would spend numerous hours in his shops working on projects and became known to many as the "Fix It Man". He had a love and a talent for woodworking. He also enjoying fishing, hunting and camping with his wife and "all" the family. He was an enthusiastic race fan including joining his son-in-law and sons in building a car for dirt track racing. And he loved watching his NASCAR races on TV!
Bob loved spending time with his kids and all his grandchildren; they brought him much joy and happiness.
He is survived by his children, Jackie (Randy) Winegar and Steve (Staci) Halter, all of Huron and Angie Halter of Sioux Falls; one granddaughter, Jennifer (Brett) Miller of Tea; three step-grandchildren, Madison Sowle of St. Paul, Nathan Sowle of Huron and Tabatha (Terry) Nedved of Alpena; and four great grandchildren, Alex, Danika, Kenzie and Brynnlee Miller of Tea.
He was preceded in death by his wife; one son, Bryan Halter; his parents; one brother, Eugene Halter; one sister, Janice Hummi; one sister-in-law, Linda Halter; and one brother-in-law Dave Hummi.
