Obituary

Raymond Ninke, age 89, of Huron, passed away Friday, August 31, 2018, at the Sanford USD Medical Center. His funeral service was held at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, September 5th, at the Our Savior's Lutheran Church. Burial with military honors was held at the Webster Cemetery, Webster.
Raymond A. Ninke was born November 16, 1928, to Emil C. and Anna (Krause) Ninke in Webster, South Dakota. He was educated in a one-room schoolhouse in Racine Township, graduating from Webster High School in 1946. For eight years, he farmed with his father until being drafted into the United States Army in 1954. Following honorable discharge, he attended SDSU, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. In 1961, he began work for the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation in Huron. He was transferred to Bismarck, North Dakota in 1966. That year, attending his 20th high school reunion, he became reacquainted with Barbara Sakariason. Neither had been married and they began dating long-distance between Bismarck and Minneapolis, where Barbara was a Registered Nurse. They were married at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Bloomington, Minnesota, on November 9, 1968. The wedding day was chosen to land between hunting seasons. Two and four years later, they adopted two infant children, Greg and Rebecca. In 1972, he was transferred back to Huron, working with the Bureau until taking a position with the Western Area Power Administration in 1981. He retired after 30 years of U.S. Government service in 1989.
A person of faith and a lifelong Lutheran, Ray was baptized and confirmed at American Lutheran Church in Webster and a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Huron since 1972.
Always a farmer at heart, he kept a garden until the day he died. Ray enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, bowling, baseball, his involvement with Elks and Legion, and a good martini. He was secretary of the Elks for a decade and remained close with friends from lodge and work.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his siblings Marvin, Herb, Doris, Ruby, Emil, Nila; and his beloved wife Barbara in 2013.
He is survived by his son, Greg and Jane Ninke of Tempe, Arizona; his daughter, Rebecca Ninke and her husband,Dave Watson of Cottage Grove, Wisconsin; and his grandchildren, Tanner, Alex, Reid, and Kate.
Memorials may be directed to Our Savior's Lutheran Church.
