The following is written by Palmer:
I was born on April 16, 1936 in Osceola, South Dakota. My father died when I was three and a half years old. Mother was then left to raise 5 children. The oldest being nine and the youngest two and one half. We lived on the farm until I was five years old. The next thirteen years were spent in Yale, South Dakota. Eight years in elementary school and four years of high school. Yale was a good community to grow up in.
Apparently I was a fairly good student. I finished high school with an A- average. I enjoyed sports, played third base for our high school softball team, and had a 400 batting average as a senior. My favorite sport was basketball. Played guard-started on the varsity my junior and senior year. Fond memories. Enjoyed my high school years.
I recall my coming to Christ in salvation at about eight to ten years old. From age ten to about fifteen years old I lacked an assurance of my salvation. I grew up under an Arminian theology (e.g. one can be saved then lost). My assurance came about through a pastor getting into God's word, and memorizing scripture. This was the beginning of my growing in the Lord.
After high school, I attended Northern State college at Aberdeen, South Dakota to get a teaching certificate to teach in rural schools (elementary). After that I taught in an elementary school for two years in Logan Township. Then, I decided that is not what I wanted to do.
So, I enrolled at Grace University in Omaha, Nebraska. I graduated with a BA Degree. After graduating from Grace, I married my sweetheart of three years, Barbara Hofer. We were married September 9, 1960, at the Bethel Church, Yale, South Dakota. We moved to Omaha, Nebraska, and lived there for one year. I worked at my old job I had during college, and Barb worked as a nurse. We also served together in a Sunday School ministry. From there, we loaded up an U-Haul trailer and headed east to Winona Lake, Indiana, to enroll at Grace Seminary, (1961-1964). I graduated in three years with a master of divinity degree. After graduation we moved back to our home community, Yale, South Dakota, and received an invitation to plant a church in Gettysburg, South Dakota. We settled there for two years (1964-1966).
Then, we moved back to Huron, South Dakota. I went to work at Armour + Co (meat-packing, worked there for twenty-two years). These were good years. Barry, our son, was born in Gettysburg, South Dakota (1964), and Laureen (our daughter) was born here in Huron, South Dakota (1967).
These years in Huron have been wonderful years. We have both served our Lord at Bethesda Church for some fifty years, serving as an elder, Bible teacher, Awana Club workers. A great church family. Have seen it grow from ninety people to three hundred people.
Our children both graduated from JVC. Both are married with six grandchildren.
What a privilege and joy to be a part of the family of God. It truly is a celebration of God's grace. No one else could give us the quality of life He has given us.
P.S. to our family:
There is no way I could describe how fully I love you all!!! What a joy you all have been! You all know the Lord. Follow him and you will know joy and contentment in your life!! Celebrate His grace as you grow up in Him!!
