Norvin J. Rudd was born October 12, 1927, to Stuart and Marie (McGeary) Rudd in Aberdeen.  He attended country schools near the family homestead northwest of Miller, and graduated from a German Catholic School in Polo, South Dakota.  He attended both the Columbus College (presently the Veteran's Hospital) in Sioux Falls and St. John's University in Collegeville, Minnesota.

Norvin joined the United States Army on May 15, 1946, where he served with the military police and in Japan. He was honorably discharged on August 31, 1947.

Norvin and his older brother, Bobby would often go to Huron for work and social events.  It was there that he met Mary Ellen Manning at the roller-skating rink. Norvin and Mary were married on October 14, 1950, at St. Martin's Catholic Church.  The couple settled in Huron and raised their five children there.

He worked for the United States Postal Service as a clerk for 36 years.  After retiring from the post office, Norvin worked for the Huron Daily Plainsman.

Norvin and Mary liked to roller skate together until he fell on the skating floor and broke his hip.  In his life Norvin read about many political leaders and enjoyed talking with people about politics.  He was also proud of his coin collection.  Norvin enjoyed taking his family on trips throughout the United States; he would occasionally like to fish, go camping or just go on a day trip to Sioux Falls taking the children to be on the Captain 11 show.  He will be greatly missed by the family that he loved so much.

Norvin was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, UCT, APWU, VFW and Toastmasters.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, James Rudd on December 1, 2004; one granddaughter, Jennifer Christian; two brothers, Edward and Robert Rudd; one sister, Mary E. Porter; and one step-granddaughter, Hillary Dupic.

Grateful for having shared in his life are his wife, Mary of Huron; four children, Judy (Loren) Nelson of Sioux Falls, Ann (Dwight) Bottum of Tulare, Mary Rudd (Gerald Johnson) of Viborg, and Mike Rudd (Vicky Dorris) of Huron; six grandchildren, Greg (Mary) Matson of Sioux Falls, Aubrey Rudd of Huron, Nicholas (Miquette) Bottum of Redfield, Cassie Bottum of Redfield, Michael Dupic of Sioux Falls, and Christopher Dupic of Vermillion; five great-grandchildren, Bryce, Chance and Serenity Matson of Sioux Falls, Avery Sobtzak of Huron and Aria Rae-Ann Bottum of Redfield; five step-grandchildren; several step-great-grandchildren; one brother, Don (Dagmar) Rudd of Silver City, New Mexico; and one sister, Adaline Busby of Amarillo, Texas.
