Nita Walter, age 66, of Huron, passed away Saturday, February 16, 2019, at the Huron Regional Medical Center. Her funeral service will be at 10:30 AM, Thursday at the Mt. Olivet Church.
In lieu of flowers, the Walter family request memorials be directed to the James Valley Christian School,1550 Dakota Avenue North,Huron, SD57350.
Nita Marie Walter was born March 15, 1952, to Marvin H. and Lillian (Wipf) Walter at the St. John's Medical Center at Huron. Her early years of school were at the Johnson and Hofer Country Schools. She then completed elementary and middle school at the school in Yale. Nita attended high school at James Valley Christian School, where she graduated in 1970. After high school, she worked at the Beadle County Assessor's Office. In 1971, Nita graduated from Northwest College of Commerce at Huron.
In 1972, Nita moved to Great Bend, Kansas, where she worked at Data Industries. She continued her career at Fuller Brush Company from 1972 to 1978. During that period, she attended Barton Community Junior College in Great Bend, Kansas and graduated in 1991. Nita also worked part-time for Great Bend Manor and Barton Community Junior College.
Nita returned to Huron in 1994. She was employed as a care giver at the Huron Nursing Home. In 1997, Nita decided to move to Phoenix, Arizona, where she continued to work for nursing homes in the area.
In 2006, Nita returned to Huron to care for her Uncle Christy Hofer, for two years until he passed away in 2008.
Nita was a life time member of Bethel Church. She enjoyed sharing her faith with youth by serving on a bus ministry and teaching Sunday School for eighteen years at a First Assembly of God Church at Great Bend, Kansas. Supporting the community was important to Nita. She made it a point to volunteer in numerous ways within her community and church; whether it was taking tickets at a James Valley Christian High School event, helping the elderly at the Salvation Army, or assisting at the Jan Manolis Safe Center. She enjoyed watching football and other sports on tv and was an avid fan of the University of Kansas Jayhawks. Nita was a loyal friend and loved keeping up with her family and friends across the country.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Paul J. and Rachel Walter, Zach B. and Matilda Wipf and Anna Wollman; her father, Marvin Walter; her sister, Jan Wallman, her aunts, Edna (Wipf) and Christy Hofer, Adeline (Wipf) and Eli Walter, and Rita (Wipf) and Eddie Lehman; and her uncles, Zack and Sherry (Frenge) Wipf, Ted and Marge (Hofer) Walter and Capt. Joseph and Katherine (Kennedy) Walter.
Grateful for having shared in her life are her mother, Lillian Walter of Huron; two brothers, Errol and Bonnie Walter of Huron and Marty and Karla Walter of Conway, Arkansas; brother-in-law, Willard Wallman of Huron; dear friend, Janiece Thompson of Huron; two aunts Jane (Wipf) and Dennis Decker and Rose (Wipf) and Gene Brenner, and many cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
