Nicholas James Nelson, age 22, of Rapid City and formerly of Huron, the son of James Nelson and the late Joan Nelson, passed away Sunday, November 8, 2020.

His funeral service was held at 3:00 PM, Friday, November 13th at the Huron Christian Church, 777 21st St SE, Huron.

Nicholas James Nelson was born January 12, 1998, to James H. and Joan M. (Riege) Nelson at Sioux Falls. He was raised in Huron, and graduated with honors from Huron High School in May 2016. Nick continued his education in the fall of 2016 at Black Hills State University, and later transferred to the School of Mines and Technology at Rapid City, where he was currently a student, majoring in civil engineering.

Nicholas had a contagious laugh, always bringing happiness in to the room with him. He loved helping other people; he made four trips to Mexico to help build homes for under-privileged families. He loved dogs, weights and fixing stuff, not necessarily in that order.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Joan Nelson; one brother, Matthew Nelson; one nephew, Gaige Nelson; one cousin, Katie Johns; his grandparents, Orville and Delrosa Riege and Harland and Norma Nelson; one aunt, Jane Nelson; and one uncle, Mark Riege.

Nicholas is survived by his father, Jim of Huron; nine siblings, Melissa (Chris) Chiprez of Burlington, Iowa, Angela (Chris) Elfering of Danube, Minnesota, Sarah (Rusty) Toupal of Huron, Josh Nelson of Hot Springs, Rachel Nelson of Huron, Nathaniel (Eliot Glenn) Nelson of New York, New York, James (Tatiana Kochotova) Nelson, Jr. of Huron, Elizabeth Nelson of Rochester, Minnesota and Alexander Nelson of Huron; and many nieces and nephews.

Nick is also survived by his aunts and uncles, Julie (Robert) Lubke, Jeffrey Nelson, Joel (Amy) Nelson, Margaret Riege, Janet (John) Palmtag, Julie (Jeff Conway) Riege, Jeri (Vic) Johns and Michael (Janis) Riege; and dozens of cousins.
