Obituary

Nancy Lea Melstad went to be with her Lord and Savior on April 16, 2020.

A private family service was held.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to United Methodist Women or First United Methodist Church Chemo Love Kit.

Nancy was born on July 29, 1953 in De Smet, South Dakota, to Nickolas and Frances (Hansen) Smith. She grew up in the De Smet community and graduated from De Smet High School in 1971. She attended Northwest College of Commence in Huron, South Dakota. Nancy was joined in marriage to Larry Melstad on October 1, 1972.

In 2016, Nancy retired after 21 years as an office administrator from Beadle County Sheriff's Office. She had previously held jobs within the community at Huron Wholesale and Farmers and Merchants Bank.

Nancy was a lifetime member of the First United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Woman (UMW). She loved being involved at the many events hosted by the UMW, one of her favorites was hosting her friends at the Spring Tour of Tables. Nancy sang in the church choir for many years. Nancy had a wonderful flair for design, which she used by creating a lovely home for her family. She extended that love into her yard and beautiful flower gardens.

Nancy is survived by her husband, Larry and her daughters, Crystal and Christy Melstad, all of Huron. Surviving siblings are Robert Smith of De Smet, Richard (Judy) Smith of De Smet, Philip (Joyce) Smith of Omaha, Nebraska, Connie (Glen) Ruyter of North Mankato, Minnesota; sister-in-law, Sharleen Smith of Huron; and brother-in-law, Jerry Galliger of Huron. Nancy was dearly loved by many nephews, nieces, great nephews and nieces. She took great joy in loving all the little ones within our family.

Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, Nickolas and Frances Smith; parents-in-law, Darcy and Laura Melstad; brothers, Larry Jim Smith and Donald Smith; nephew, DJ Smith; great-nephew, Brandon; great nephews, Alex and Aaron Smith; and sister-in-law, Carol Galliger.
