Melvin Wieting, age 89, of Huron, passed away Monday, June 6, 2022, at the Huron Regional Medical Center.
His memorial visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 PM, Monday, June 13th at the Kuhler Funeral Home, with his family present from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. A prayer service will be held at 6:30 PM, Monday at the Kuhler Funeral Home. His prayer service was live-streamed through our website.
Interment was in the Ebenezer Cemetery, rural Doland.
Memorials may be directed to Gideons International , Byron Bible Camp or James Valley Christian School .
Melvin George Wieting was born December 30, 1932, to George and Anna (DeVries) Wieting, at Onida, South Dakota. At a young age, his family moved back to the family farm at Hitchcock. Melvin graduated from Hitchcock High School in 1951. He entered the U.S. Army on August 20, 1953 and served until June 21, 1955, at Fort Riley, Kansas, and then Fort Carson, Colorado.
In his early years, Melvin owned a race car and enjoyed spending time working on the car. Later in life, he enjoyed watching car races.
While at Fort Carson, he met Kathleen Wells and they were married on May 27, 1955, at Pueblo, Colorado. After his honorable discharge, they returned to Hitchcock to farm. After farming a few years, they moved back to Pueblo, where he worked at CF&I Steel Mill for 20 years. After his parents passed away, Melvin moved his family back to the family farm at Hitchcock, where he farmed until retirement. For many years after returning to South Dakota, Melvin installed and serviced diary barn and air conditioning equipment.
He enjoyed fixing things and was a good leader for his children in 4-H. He loved the Lord and his family. He was a member of Bethesda Mennonite Brethren Church. Melvin was also member of Farm Bureau and served in various committees/positions with Farm Bureau. He drove school bus for the Hitchcock School District and also for the Byron Bible Camp for many years.
He was a long-time member of Gideons International. Melvin enjoyed attending sporting and extra-curricular events of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, George and Anna; and one brother, Maynard Wieting.
Survivors include his wife, Kathleen Wieting, Huron; five children, Sherry (Raymond) Edwards of Tulare, Mel (Rosemary) Wieting of Minneapolis, MN, Jodene (Brent) Decker of Huron, Rochelle (Phil) Wipf of Wessington Springs and Terry (Lori) Wieting of Huron; 15 grandchildren, Ray Edwards, Jr., Joy (Darrell) Dalke, Theo (Lesa) Edwards, Amanda Ormonde, Paula (Ben) Wiebe, Andrew (Lisa) Wieting, Kim Wieting, Melissa (Zach) Blum, Amber (Chad) Erdmann, Eric (Katie) Decker, Natalie (Joshua) Bartel, Mallory Wipf, Tristan (Carmen) Wieting, Joshua Wieting and Karilyn Wieting; and 25 great-grandchildren.
