Melvin Schimke, age 66, of Huron, died Wednesday, August 24, 2016, at the Huron Regional Medical Center. Burial of his cremated remains will be in the Riverside Cemetery at a later date.
Melvin Lee Schimke was born November 20, 1949, to Curtis and Larraine (Newell) Schimke at Wessington Springs. He graduated from Wessington Springs High School in 1969. After high school he worked for a combine crew and enjoyed working on the family farm. One of his favorite tasks was stacking hay by hand. He was later employed at Leisure Technology in Huron. In the mid 1970's, he relocated to Rapid City to attend carpenter school.Later Melvin worked at Jolly Lane Greenhouse. In 2014, Melvin moved to Huron to be closer to his parents.
Animals had a special place in Melvin's heart including the family dog, the piglets on the farm and especially his cat, Lucky. Melvin was a very artistic and enjoyed ceramics and sewing. He had a green thumb and lived in the garden. Melvin was known as a jack of all trades and no matter the job - he loved the work he did.
He is survived by his parents, Curtis and Larraine Schimke of Huron; his brother, Garry (LaVonne) Schimke of Sioux Falls; two sisters, Sandra (Merle) Dahme and Judy (Jim) Cummings, all of Sioux Falls; and his special cousin and friend Dale Schimke of Wessington Springs.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents.
