Melvin Fuehrer, age 89, of Huron, died Sunday, May 31, 2015, at the SunQuest Health Care Center. His funeral service was at 1:30 PM, Thursday, June 4th, at the Riverview United Methodist Church, with Rev. Dean Trapp, officiating. Burial was in the Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery.
Melvin Fuehrer was born August 2, 1925, to Albert and Elnora (Krutzfeldt) Fuehrer in Beadle County, near Virgil, South Dakota. He graduated from Virgil High School. Mel served in the United States Army in Occupied Japan, and was honorably discharged April 15, 1947.
On October 17, 1949, Mel married Betty Mae Ramsell in Huron. They made their home near Virgil, raising four sons, Craig, Brent, Kyle and Brice. Farming and raising livestock was the path of life he chose. Through hard work and determination, his dreams became a reality. Mel and Betty moved to Huron after Mel retired from active farming.
Mel had many outside interests including playing cards, especially bridge, golfing, hunting, fishing, and both watching and "talking" sports. His gift was with numbers and his ability to remember names was truly remarkable. His ease with conversation was a blessing, and he was a friend to many.
Mel was a member of the Virgil United Methodist Church and the Huron American Legion.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Craig in 2009; three brothers-in-law, Marvin Swenson, Gene Sibley, and Paul Ramsell; and two sisters-in-law, Ruth Cernick and Janet Ditmanson-Henderson-Peterson.
Grateful for having shared in his life are his wife, Betty Fuehrer of Huron; three sons, Brent (Patty) Fuehrer of Huron, Kyle (Karen) Fuehrer of Sturgis, and Brice Fuehrer of Sioux Falls; seven grandchildren, Lisa Fuehrer, Trisha (Clay) Ochsner, Kara (Matt) Wiegel, Jodi Hettinger, Kristine Hettinger, Alex Grebin, and Sara Grebin; several great-grandchildren; two sisters, Marcella Swenson Sibley and Margie (Bruce) Schiltz, both of Sioux Falls; one sister-in-law, Ila Ramsell Haskell of Huron; and many nieces and nephews.
