Obituary

Mary Jo Peters, age 57, of Huron, died Tuesday, October 6, 2015, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. Her funeral mass was held at 10:30 AM, Monday, October 12th, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, with Rev. Terry Anderson and Rev. Tom Schliessmann, celebrants. Burial was in the St. Martins Catholic Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Huron Lions Club Diabetic Support Group.
Mary Joelle Pietrus was born December 25, 1957, to Leo and Joycelyn (Hertel) Pietrus at Pierre. At the age of four, Mary Jo was diagnosed with diabetes. She attended St. Joseph's School and graduated from T.F. Riggs High School in 1976. Mary Jo then attended Augustana University in Sioux Falls for three years. She returned to Pierre where she was employed at Head Start.
On December 28, 1979, Mary Jo married Marlowe Peters in Pierre. The couple moved to Huron in 1984 and opened the Donut Shoppe which they have owned and operated since.
Mary Jo enjoyed reading, playing Buncos and Sudoku, gardening in her flower garden, attending craft shows and decorating for the holidays, especially Christmas, because it was her birthday. Mary Jo was also a member of the Beta Xi Sorority. She adored her cats.
Mary Jo was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church and on the church council. She was active in the Catholic Daughters of America having held the office of Regent until January of 2015. She was very active in study groups. Mary Jo was known for her devotion for the Blessed Mother.She became a Benedictine Oblate with the Mother of God Monastery and Benedictine Sisters of Watertown in January 2015.
She was preceded in death by her father, Leo Pietrus; her grandparents; her father-in-law, Olin Peters; and two sisters-in-law, Brenda (Mark) Traut and Marsha Sander.
Grateful for having shared in her life are her husband, Marlowe of Huron; her son, Matthew Peters of Huron; her mother, Joycelyn Pietrus of Pierre; two brothers, Charles (Sharon) Pietrus and Stephen (Susan) Pietrus, both of Pierre; one sister, Cheryl (Clarence) Gloe of St. Charles, Illinois; her mother-in-law, Freda Peters of Pierre; one brother-in-law, Ron (Donita) Peters of Vivian; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
