Mary Ellen Bartell, the daughter of Harvey and Katherine (Mense) Bartell was born on December 11, 1945, at the Wilshire Hospital in Los Angeles, California. Mary grew up and attended school in Riverside, California.
After Mary married John Haigh, the couple made their home in Wessington, South Dakota, and to this union were born five children: Bill, Lori, Jeffrey, Michele and Tom. Most of Mary's life was spent raising four children much of the time on her own. She also proudly worked at St. Joseph's Indian School and Our Home.
Mary married Douglas Horn on December 31, 1999, in Wolsey, South Dakota. After her marriage to Doug, the couple lived in rural Wolsey, for a time before embarking on a 10-year adventure traveling in their motorhome through Texas, Arizona, Florida and the East Coast. In 2017, the couple moved to Huron.
Mary enjoyed spending time in the outdoors gardening, fishing and camping. She was an excellent cook and baker. She also loved her dogs: Bob, Rascal, Smokey and Willard. The most enjoyable times for Mary, however, were the times she spent with her family and friends, especially her kids and grandkids during birthdays and Christmas.
Grateful for having shared in Mary's life are her husband, Douglas Horn of Huron; her three children, Bill (Lisa) Haigh of Lubbock, Texas, Lori (Dale) Heller of Huron, and Michele (special friend Michelle) Haigh of Sioux Falls; three step-children: Emily (Alan) Isbell of Oregon, Ohio, Deanna (Gerald) Parker of Denmark, Maine, and Lisa (Carey) Horn of White Bear Lake, Minnesota; four grandchildren, Ashton, Tahni, Caitlin and MiKayla; four step-grandchildren, Ashley, Joshua, Katherine and Scott; several great-grandchildren; one brother-in-law, Rick (Colleen) Horn of Austin, Minnesota; and several nieces and nephews.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, John Haigh; two sons, Jeffrey and Tom Haigh; and four sisters, Leilani, Penny, Dawn and Ruth.
