Mary M. Schill was born May 16, 1916, to Christ and Dorothea (Buerkle) Schill at Gackle, North Dakota. She married Howard Bill in July 1941, at Alpena, South Dakota.
Mary was a member of the American Lutheran Church, where she served on various committees, sang in the choir; served as Sunday school teacher and was one of the major pie bakers for many years for the American Lutheran Dining Hall during the fair. Mary was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and 8 & 40. She was a 15-year volunteer as a Pink Lady at the Huron Regional Medical Center. Mary also served as a committee woman for the Beadle County Republican party for a number of years and served on the election board for 50 years. When she was in her 80's she started volunteering at the Senior Center helping serve lunch to other seniors. As you can tell by her years of service to various organizations, Mary was a real people person and when she could make people smile by serving or baking them cookies or cake then she was happy.
Mary and her husband Howard owned the Citi Service/Citco/Mobile gas station on 3rd and Dakota for many, many years. Mary did the bookkeeping and Howard the mechanic work - the dynamic duo. Mary also worked at the Red Owl Grocery store in the early 1950's and worked at the Junior High School lunch program in the early 1970's.
Grateful for having shared her life are her two daughters, Catherine Bill of Eugene, Oregon and Beth (David) Henderson of Tulsa, Oklahoma; one son, Todd Bill of Alpharetta, Georgia; five grandchildren, Lisa Henderson, Mathew (Courtney) Henderson, Kimberley Henderson, Bianca Bill and Alexa Bill; three great-grandchildren, Bethany Henderson, Dylan Henderson and Ethan Henderson. Mary is also survived by her two half-sisters, Pearl and Geneva.
Due to a fall, Mary spent the last few years of life at the SunQuest Healthcare Center. She enjoyed life there with old friends and the staff who were so good to her.
