Marvin Hoerauf, age 88, of Huron, died Monday, September 12, 2016, at the Sanford USD Medical Center at Sioux Falls. His funeral service was held at 1:00 PM, Friday, September 16th at the Congregational United Church of Christ. Burial was in the Riverside Cemetery with military rites by the Huron Veterans Council.
Marvin Hoerauf was born December 30, 1927, to Carl and Amelia (Ding) Hoerauf on the family farm near Hebron, North Dakota. He attended a country school outside of Hebron, and graduated from Hebron High School.
On June 24, 1951, Marvin married Elaine Kein, and then enlisted in the United States Army. He returned to the family farm to help his father. Marvin and Elaine continued to raise their family on the farm. They later divorced.
On June 11, 1976, Marvin married Marlene Stamness Weidner. They raised their family on the farm at Hebron. In 1983, they moved to Alpena, South Dakota and to Huron in 1999.
Whether he was working for himself or was a hired-hand, Marvin enjoyed fixing fence. He loved farming including gardening and anything John Deere. Marv also enjoyed reading, watching Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune, playing cards, and wood crafting birdhouses.Marv's sense of humor and eternal optimism will be greatly missed. Anyone who met Marvin was impressed by his humor.
He was a life member of the American Legion for 60 years. He was also a member of the Hebron Evangelical Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife of 24 years, Elaine; his son, David Hoerauf; his grandson, Bradley Hoerauf; his granddaughter, Rachel Goehner; his grandson-in-law, Cooper Stuart; his sister, Marjorie (Chuck) Barlow; and numerous aunts and uncles.
Grateful for having shared in his life are his wife of 40 years, Marlene of Huron; his children, Kent R. (Cheryl) Hoerauf of Hettinger, North Dakota, Melinda (Tom) Jaeger of Minnetonka, Minnesota, Ryan (Deanna) Hoerauf of Odessa, Texas, Shari (Wes) Goehner of Huron, Karen (Bob) Davis of Oak Harbor, Washington, JoAnn (Kent) Jones of Huron, Joyce (Harlan) Loffelmacher of Spokane, Washington, and Tim (Mary) Weidner of Kalispell, Montana; and daughter-in-law, Eileen (Bud) Waldo of Hauser, Idaho. Marvin will also be missed by his grandchildren, Derrick (Heather) Hoerauf, Mathew (Tracey) Hoerauf, Amber (Chad) Gill, Megan (Brian) Vaughan, Michelle (Dustin) Stum, Lauren Massey, Andrew (Lorie) Hoerauf, Sarah (Todd) Patterson, Megan Jaeger-Stuart, Taylor Jaeger, Lindsey (Ross) Spencer, Nicole Loffelmacher, Amy Loffelmacher, Brian Weidner, Cody Weidner, Ryan (Heather) Goehner and Becca Goehner; and great-grandchildren, Jerod Hoerauf, Owen Gill, Grayson Snapp, Jackson Stum, Brycen and Raelyn Hoerauf, Hadley Patterson, Autumn, Penelope and Barrett Spencer, and Lincoln and Logan Goehner. He is also survived by his sisters, Marian (Paul) Retzer of Big Arm, Montana, Marlene (Donny) Walth of Plymouth, Minnesota, and Mardella (Charles) Pluth of Madison, Wisconsin.
