Marina T. Pappas, age 68, of Huron, passed away Saturday, June 22, 2019, at the Huron Regional Medical Center, with her family at her side. Her funeral service will be at 10:30 AM, Wednesday June 26th, at the Grace Episcopal Church. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery.
Marina Thomas Pappas was born June 29, 1950, to Thomas J. and Cleo (Manolis) Pappas, at the St. John's Hospital, Huron. Marina grew up in Huron, and was member of the girl scouts. She took lessons in piano, horse riding, dance and Greek. She taught herself how to play the guitar. She played the flute in the high school band and was a member of Job's Daughters. During the summer of 1967, Marina, her sister, Christine, her brother, James and their mother, Cleo, went to Greece to visit family and the sites, for two months. In May 1968, Marina graduated from Huron High School. She then attended South Dakota State University and Huron College, and graduated. In 1971, Marina went backpacking through 16 countries with her sister, Christine, and two friends, Michelle (Haggar) Hanson and Trixie (Fillah) Bortnem.
Her grandfather, Jim Pappas built the Square Deal Grocery in September of 1921. Later her parents, Tommy and Cleo, took on the ownership of the store and raised their family there. As the third generation, Marina continued the tradition of owning and working at the Square Deal Grocery. She later worked at the Violet Tschetter Memorial Home.
Marina enjoyed drawing and working amateur radio.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Cleo on January 25, 1983 and her father, Thomas on November 3, 1986.
Grateful for having shared in her life are her sister, Christine Pappas; her brother, James Pappas; and special family members: aunt, Janice Manolis; cousins, Peter and Linda Marcus, Gus and Cheryle Marcus, Cindy and Red Wilk, Gus and Eunice Manolis, and Todd and Tricia Manolis and their families.
