Obituary

Marian L. Van Poll, age 96, of Huron, died Monday, November 23, 2015, at the Huron Regional Medical Center, after a brief illness. Her memorial service was held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, January 16th at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Andrew Crandall and Chad Zachrison, officiating. Her cremains were entombed at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery Mausoleum in Huron.
Marian Louise Freese was born June 4, 1919, at Gann Valley to Otto and Carrie (Ward) Freese.
They moved to Wessington where she grew up and graduated from high school in 1938. She worked at the telephone company as an operator. She moved to Minneapolis in the early 1940s where she worked as a stenographer and secretary at the Bureau of Engraving until 1953.
On May 30, 1948, she married Cornelius 'Van' Van Poll at Wessington. They lived in Minneapolis until 1967 when they moved to Seattle. In 1978, they retired to Huron.
She was a 48-year-member of the Navy Wives Clubs of America and had served at the national level. She was also a long-time member of the V.F.W. Aux., Ladies Aux. of the Fleet Reserve Assoc., American Legion Aux., and D.A.V. Aux. She was very active in volunteer work in the community and nationally.
She enjoyed traveling to the Far East as well as across the United States, including Alaska and Hawaii. She loved crossword puzzles, sewing, needlework, crafts and collecting frogs. Marian was an avid fan of the Minnesota Twins and NASCAR.
She is survived by two daughters, Carrie Watkins (Mike Smetzer) and Louise Van Poll (Ron Reed), all of Huron; a brother, Neil Freese (Gail) of Stillwater, Minnesota; twelve grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband; a step-son, Hubert Van Poll in Viet Nam; a step-daughter, Carol Van Poll; a son-in-law, Donald Watkins; three sisters, Martha Stroth, Dorothy Hull and Henrietta in infancy; a brother, David in infancy; and four brothers-in-law, Elmer Skoggins, Edward Oestreich, Alvin Hull and Walter Stroth.
