Margaret "Maggie" E. Schrader, age 78, of Huron, died Saturday, February 27, 2016, at her home. Her funeral service was held at 10:30 AM, Tuesday, March 1st at the First United Methodist Church. Burial was in the Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery.
Margaret Elizabeth Luke was born July 19, 1937, to August and Mary (Neis) Luke at Marion. She attended rural school and then graduated from Parker High School in 1955. Maggie graduated in March 1956 from the South Dakota Beauty Academy at Sioux Falls. Maggie worked at Betty's Beauty Shop in Huron from 1956 to 1958.
On August 2, 1958, Maggie married Warren "Keith" Schrader at Huron. After their marriage, she worked as a beautician for seventeen years in her home, then as a cook for Huron High School and later as a sales clerk at Pheasant Liquor. Maggie began work at the Beadle County Register of Deeds in June 1989 and retired in December 2000. She also volunteered at the Huron Regional Medical Center as a Pink Lady.
Maggie was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She enjoyed spending time with her family, playing cards and cooking for them. It was always nice to see a surprise supper sitting in your car after a long day at work and we always looked forward to her famous dumplings!
She enjoyed time with her special friends and she loved serving the church as an usher, preparing for communion and organizing the delivery routes for the annual Thanksgiving meals. Maggie brought comfort to all whom she met and was most happy when helping others. She always had a warm smile on her face and you could always count on her telling you what she was thinking. Along with cooking and cards, she enjoyed playing Yahtzee, knitting, word find and crossword puzzles.
On November 3, 2015, Maggie was diagnosed with high grade myelodysplastic syndrome. With the MDS, many other unexplained complications arose that put her in and out of several hospitals and emergency rooms, and after numerous procedures were tried, it was deemed that nothing more could be done. We were then able to have her at home for eleven days on hospice where she was able to have some peaceful, comfortable days to say her good byes. She will be missed by many.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one grandson, Travis Knouse; one brother, Donald (Berdell) Luke; one sister, Marlene (Tom) Weber; two brothers-in-law, John Kreis and Jack Sarnowski; and one sister-in-law, Marie Luke.
