Madeline M. Hansen, the daughter of Theodore and Marguerite (Swartz) Hansen, was born on May 10, 1933, in De Smet, South Dakota. Madeline attended schools in the Kingsbury County area and graduated from De Smet High School. Madeline also attended St. John's School of Nursing and graduated with a degree in nursing. Madeline worked as a nurse for the St. John's Hospital in Huron for a time until she began helping her husband with the family business.
Madeline married Raymond Johnson on November 5, 1954, at the First United Methodist Church in Huron, and to this union seven children were born, Michael, Steven, Debra, Rodney, David, Roger and Dennis. Madeline and Raymond made their home in Huron and together owned and operated Johnson Sand and Gravel. Madeline worked as bookkeeper, but she was always ready to lend a helping hand whether it would be driving truck or loading sand for the customers visiting the business.
Madeline was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Faith Alive Global Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women of Faith. Madeline was very active in the church helping serve communion and helping with the many funeral luncheons. Madeline was also a member of the Nursing Association for many years. Madeline enjoyed sewing and was an excellent cook. She enjoyed gardening especially her peony bed, which is still thriving today. Madeline and Raymond loved to visit the Black Hills. She enjoyed snowmobiling and was a member of the Great Plains Snowmobiling Club. Madeline had great fun cruising through town in her Jeep.
Madeline knew everyone in her local neighborhood. If a person was in need, Madeline would be there. She took care of the elderly and enjoyed making their lives easier. Some of Madeline's most cherished times were those she spent with her family and grandchildren, especially the big family gatherings on Christmas Eve and the Fourth of July.
Grateful for having shared in Madeline's Life are her six children, Michael (Sharon) Johnson of Huron, Debra (Gary) French of Cavour, Rod (Kelly) Johnson, David (Julie) Johnson, Roger Johnson and Dennis Johnson, all of Huron, SD; nine grandchildren, Scott Johnson, Melissa (Andy) Ettswold, Matt (Rachel) Johnson, Doug (Katie) French, Brandi (Keith) Fitzgerald, Mark Johnson, Bo Johnson, Todd (Kelby) Johnson and Dustin (Megan) French; two step-grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one brother-in-law, Robert (Mary) Johnson of De Smet; one sister-in-law, Shirley (Arlie) Burnett of Huron; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; and special friend, Dr. Robert Hohm.
