Leroy S. Atkins, age 82, of Huron, passed away Friday May 27, 2022, at Avantara-Huron.

His funeral service was held at 11:00 AM, Friday, June 3rd, at the First United Methodist Church, Huron.  His funeral service was live streamed on the Kuhler Funeral Home website. 

A graveside service was held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, June 4th at the Esterly Cemetery near Florence.

Visitation was held from 3:00 to 7:00 PM, Thursday, June 2nd at the Kuhler Funeral Home, with his family present from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Thursday evening.

Leroy Atkins was born April 10, 1940, to Ralph and Leola (Hart) Atkins at Huron, South Dakota. He was raised on a farm near Cavour, soon after graduating from high school, he joined the South Dakota Army National Guard. He would go on to a 40-year career in the National Guard, full time. This time included a deployment to Germany.

On June 28, 1964, Leroy married Sandra Fish in Volga, South Dakota.

When not working, Leroy enjoyed coaching Little League baseball, playing fastpitch softball, fishing, hunting and gardening. He also spent many years as an active and strong member of the Huron ELKS Lodge #444. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and family.

Leroy was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Leola Atkins; his son, Craig Atkins; his son-in-law, Gene Ronke; his brother, Dennis Atkins; his brother-in-law, Bill North; his in-laws, Mavis and Bob Vostad and Marlys and Gene Ibach.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Sandy Atkins; his daughter, Kristy (Ron) Rice; his grandchildren, Samantha Knopp, Ashley (Beau) Wensing and Adam Ronke; his great-grandchildren, Isabelle Knopp and James Wensing; his siblings, Jim (Edie) Atkins, Lois (Don) Houck, Margaret North, Cecil Atkins and Bonnie (Doug) Petersen; his sister-in-law, Marge Atkins; his brother-in-law, Bob (Connie) Fish and Karen (Bob) Steptoe.
