Larry D. Zavesky, 86, of Huron, passed away Wednesday, August 3, 2022, at the Huron Regional Medical Center.
His funeral service was held at 10:00 AM, Tuesday, August 9, at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church. Entombment followed in the Restlawn Memory Gardens Mausoleum. Military honors were conducted by the Huron Veterans Council and Bensely-Rounds American Legion Post 280. His service was live streamed through the church's website.
A visitation was held from 1:00 – 7:00 PM, Monday, August 8, at the Kuhler Funeral Home, with family present from 5:00 -7:00 PM.
Larry Zavesky was born November 19, 1935, to Raymond and Victoria (Ploutz) Zavesky in Ellsworth, Kansas, where he was raised on the family farm. After graduating high school, he attended Kansas State University, earning his master's degree in Soil Science. In 1959 Larry entered the U.S. Army attending basic training in Fort Leonard Wood, MO. During his military career he was stationed in Germany and San Antonio, TX. After being honorably discharged, he started his career with the Soil Conservation Service in Kansas. He met his wife Janet, on a blind date on Valentine's Day and they were united in marriage on October 6, 1963, at the Methodist Church in Jennings, Kansas.
Larry and Janet started their married life in Hays, KS, moving to Leavenworth, KS and then settling in Huron in 1972. They were married for 52 years, raising five children. Larry retired from the Soil Conservation Service after 33 years. Larry and his sons had a lawn mowing service for 18 years. These services included mowing, snow removal and roto tiling gardens. Larry and Janet enjoyed traveling to Hawaii, Alaska, and London, along with other destinations with their nutrition products, Golden Pride.
Larry had many hobbies including woodworking, hunting, and fishing. Gardening was his passion, and he was well known for his beautiful yard, flower beds and garden produce. He was an active member of the Huron Rotary club, where he served as past president. Larry was involved at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He was always up for a good game of cards.
Larry is survived by five children, Deb Adams and Drew Haasch of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin and Deb's son, Trent Greschke, Brian and Sasha Zavesky of Sioux Falls and their sons, Landon, Will, Jackson and Tyler. Dale and Bobbi Jo Zavesky of Huron and their daughter, Jordyn and son, Aiden. Bruce and Jeanne Zavesky of Rapid City and their son, Maxton. Don and Liz Zavesky of Iroquois and their children, Issac Mount, Seth Porter, Ian Mount, and Trysten, Reilyn, and Adisyn Zavesky; one brother-in-law, Jim Hames; and one sister-in-law, Judy Nusse.
Larry was preceded in death by his wife, Janet; his parents; and his sister, Jeanie Hemmy.
