Larry D. Peterson was born February 23, 1941, to Albert and Verna (Gluenkin) Peterson on the farm west of Willow Lake, South Dakota. He grew up there and graduated from Willow Lake High School in 1959.
In 1961, Larry went to a dance and met the love of his life, Joyce N. Baumann. From the words of his brother, Gary – "Larry fell really hard for her". Larry and Joyce married on April 21,1962, at Willow Lake. In 1964, they moved to Huron, where they resided the rest of his life.
Larry worked for the telephone company his whole career, retiring after 40 years. During this time, he was a member of and served as the President of the Union, CWA #7506, and was a board member of HB Telco Federal Credit Union for many years. He often talked about working the Great Flood in Rapid City. After retiring from the telephone company, he worked for Venture Comm installing fiber optic, worked for his brother, Gary, installing phone systems, and helped Dwight Warkenthein with harvest.
Larry spent many years coaching hockey and traveling all over South Dakota and even to Canada, taking the whole family and making many happy memories and great friends along the way. He also enjoyed shooting pool and bowling, playing on leagues for several years, especially playing in the Heartland pool tournament. One of his greatest pleasures was fishing. They started camping and fishing before campgrounds were a thing at Little Bend – he knew how to rough it. He loved fishing with family, friends and co-workers – he fished with everyone he could. He fished in many tournaments, including the Filthy Fifteen, and made trips to Canada. He spent many evenings, after fishing was done, playing cards and bean bags. He was very competitive at these games, accusing the women (Joyce and Lorna) of always cheating! 😊 He always loved his coffee and spent several mornings at Taco John's with his coffee buddies.
He was an active member of Huron Lodge #26 A.F. & A.M., James Valley Shrine Club, Yelduz Shrine, High 12, and the First Presbyterian Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Joyce; his daughter, Lorna Poncelet; his sister, Joy Carroll; and an infant sister, Lorna.
Grateful for having shared in his life are his son, Dave (Brenda) Peterson of Huron and his son-in-law, Jeff Poncelet of Ramona; his grandchildren, Carissa (Blake) Hanisch, Jessica (Robert) Charles, Shauna (Spencer) Shoultz, Dirk (Kylee) Peterson, and Dillon Peterson; his exchange student son, Sjur "Ed" (Renée) Klaette of Oslo, Norway and his family, Marlen Klaette and Marcus (Martine Hermansen) Klaette; many great-grandchildren; his brother, John Peterson, his sister, Vivian Johnson; his brother, Gary Peterson; his sister-in-law, Edna Pearson; and many nieces and nephews.
