Larry Johnson, age 81, of Huron, passed away peacefully at his home, with his family by his side, on Saturday, October 30, 2021.
His memorial service was held at 10:30 AM, Wednesday, November 3rd at the Mount Calvary Lutheran Church. Urn Bearers were Larry's grandchildren, Tyler Dehne, Chris Dehne, Samantha Dehne, Michael Johnson, Matt Johnson, Logan Johnson, Cole Johnson and Ethan Johnson.
Larry Johnson was born July 3, 1940, to Leonard and Iva (Ruskell) Johnson at Sioux Falls, the oldest of two sons. Larry graduated from Huron High School in 1958. After graduation, he moved to San Diego, California, where he worked for National Steel and Ship Building, in the same department as his dad. In 1961, Larry returned to Huron to work with his mother and brother, Bob, for the family business, Yellow Top Cab.
In 1966, Larry moved to Jamestown, North Dakota, where he worked for the United States Fish and Wildlife Service.
On June 17, 1967, Larry married Mavis Schmidt. Two children were born to this union, Leslie and David, completing their family.
In 1970, the family moved to Bismarck, North Dakota, where Larry attended the Bismarck Junior College. He graduated with an associate degree in Ag Business.
In 1972, the family returned to Huron. Larry worked for various ag businesses, including Peavey Elevator and Huron Grain and Feed. He also worked at various financial institutions; SIC Financial, Barclays America, Dakotaland, and Bank First. He then worked at DM&E Railroad until his retirement. He used to say he worked in town to support his love of working at their family cattle/farming operation.
Grateful for having shared in Larry's life is his wife, Mavis of 54 years; daughter, Leslie (Jon) Dehne of Shakopee, MN; son, David (Tami) Johnson of Boise, ID; grandchildren, Tyler (Joleen) Dehne of Shakopee, MN, Chris Dehne of Shakopee, MN, Samantha Dehne of Denver, CO, Michael Johnson of St. Paul MN, Matt Johnson of St. Paul, MN, Logan (Josee) Johnson of Huron, SD, Cole Johnson of Huron, Ethan Johnson of Pierre, SD; five great-grandchildren and another great-granddaughter any day.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Bob Johnson.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the James Valley Diabetes Group Care of C/O Huron Regional Medical Center, 172 4th St SE, Huron SD 57350.
