L. Elaine Martens, age 94, of Huron, passed away Thursday, November 7, 2019, at The Willshire (formerly SunQuest Village). Her funeral service was held at 10:30 AM, Monday, November 11th at Living Hope Alliance Church. Burial was in the Wessington Cemetery at 1:00 PM Monday.

Laura Elaine Sargent was born August 14, 1925, to John and Laura (Orr) Sargent at Murdo, South Dakota, where she received her elementary education at Jones County rural schools. She moved with her family to a farm near Wessington in 1939 and graduated from Miller High School.

On November 28, 1944, she married Francis Martens of Wessington and they farmed in Nance Township until his death in 1982. She was active in the local ladies' aid and extension club and served 20 years as secretary for the Tipton Community Church.

After her husband's death she worked at Raven Industries in Huron and moved to Huron in 1984.

She was a member of the Living Hope Alliance Church. She volunteered with the Huron Regional Medical Center Auxiliary and Hospice Programs and with RSVP. She was honored as the HRMC volunteer of the year in 2007.

She is survived by her children, Rodney (Melanie) Martens of Piedmont, South Dakota and Marcia (Bill) Stobbs of Huron, South Dakota; three grandchildren, Laura (Brad) McGirr of Huron, South Dakota, Eric (Jill) Martens of Farmington, Minnesota and Wade Stobbs of Huron, South Dakota; six great-grandchildren, Jett and Jazzlyn McGirr, Morgan Burnett, Mia Sabow-Martens and Elaina and Julia Martens; two step-grandchildren, Jeremy (Carrie) Beckman and Jamie Beckman; one brother-in-law, Harry (Judy) Martens of Rapid City, South Dakota; one sister-in-law, Dorothy Sargent of Miller, South Dakota; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; four brothers, John, Kenneth, Roger and Burton Sargent; five sisters-in-law; one daughter-in-law, Cay Martens; and four nephews.
