January 21, 1964 – January 11, 2026
Kathie Jo Bostrom, age 61, of Huron, passed away peacefully at home under hospice care after a courageous battle with cancer.
Her life was celebrated at 2:00 PM, Saturday, January 17, at the Grace Episcopal Church.
Visitation with family present was held from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, Friday, January 16 at the Kuhler Funeral Home.
Kathie Jo Bostrom was born January 21, 1964, to John W. and Maxine (Krause) Bostrom, at Sioux Falls, South Dakota. She attended Dakota State University for Data Processing and Retail Small Business Management. Later, she attended law enforcement training with the South Dakota Highway Patrol, and was stationed at Huron in 1985, where she served as a highway patrolman for 17 years. Kathie then served as a Beadle County Deputy Sheriff for 10 years. She also taught law enforcement classes for a time at Pierre. Kathie’s final public service to the Huron community was as the Director of Transportation for the Huron School District, until her health failed and she was forced to retire at the end of November 2025.
Kathie loved watching the Kansas City Chiefs. She cherished the time spent with all of her animals. Kathie was proud of her Ford Mustangs. She liked to follow the NASCAR races, especially when Jeff Gordon was driving. Kathie also enjoyed traveling.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents and her parents.
Grateful for having shared in her life are her wife, Joni Packard of Huron; one sister, Sharon (Percy) Verbrugge of Sioux Falls; two nieces, Sarah (Scott) Husak of Michigan and Megan (Matt) Peterson of Sioux Falls; her parents-in-law, Robert and Marilyn Packard of Huron; one sister-in-law, Julie (Daniel) Puffer of Fremont, Nebraska; one brother-in-law, David (Linda) Packard of San Antonio, Texas; her special friend and “keeper”, Cindy (Kevin) Eckmann of Huron; several nieces and nephews; and many dear friends.
