Karen Kaye Janzen was born July 18,1942, to Mike and Elda (Flickner) Janzen at Marion, South Dakota. She attended a country grade school near Salem, South Dakota and graduated from Canistota High School. She graduated from Freeman Jr. College with a teaching degree. Karen taught kindergarten at Howard, South Dakota, at Edgerton, Minnesota and kindergarten at Doland, South Dakota.
On December 28, 1965, Karen married her sweetheart, DeWayne "Butch" Hofer who loved her dearly. They made their home near Doland, South Dakota.
She loved God and others with all her heart. She spent her time on things that mattered most and loved her husband, children, grandchildren and her whole family. She taught us how to care for people and those things that are eternal.
Karen thoroughly enjoyed meeting new people. Her conversation always included the following question: "If you died today, do you know where you would spend eternity?" For those who replied with a "No" or "I hope so", her following question was always, "Do you want to be sure where you're going?" If they replied with a "Yes" Karen would then pray regardless of where they were - HyVee, Walmart, Sam's, in parking lots, on airplanes, or on the sidewalk in front of Wall Drug. She took the great commission seriously and carried it out.
Karen and Butch daily quoted over 120 memorized Bible verses. One of their favorite passages was Psalm 91. They were true examples of hiding God's Word in their heart.
She was a member of New Beginnings Faith Church, Sioux Falls.
Karen was preceded in death by her parents and many brothers- and sisters-in-law.
Her memory will live on in the life of her children, Mike (Teri) Hofer of Doland, South Dakota, Robynn (Scott) Coates of Carl Junction, Missouri and Scott (Heather) Hofer, Carl Junction, Missouri; six grandchildren, Emma, Sam, Hailey, Rhys, Sophia, and Isabelle, and three bonus grandsons, David, Trent and Julian.
