Joyce Zerfoss, age 86, of Wessington, passed away surrounded by her family on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at the Huron Regional Medical Center.

Her funeral service was held at 11:00 AM, Thursday, July 17, at the First Presbyterian Church, Wessington. Burial followed in the Wessington Cemetery. Her service was live-streamed.

Her visitation was held at the church from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM on Thursday.

Memorials may be directed to the Wessington Ambulance Service, Watson Krauter Post #110 American Legion of Wessington, American Cancer Society or another charity of your choice.

Joyce Elaine was born on March 20, 1939, to Harry and Grace (Bussell) Hawley, in Huron, South Dakota. She grew up and attended school in Wolsey.

On September 29, 1956, Joyce married her high school sweetheart, Jerold Zerfoss. They were blessed with two children, Dawn and Darwin. Joyce was a supportive Navy wife, moving to several states with the family for 20 years.

After retiring from the military in 1975, they started a new chapter in their lives and moved back to Wessington where they reconnected with their family and friends.

Joyce was active in the American Legion Auxiliary, the Presbyterian Church and other community activities.

Her family was always an important part of her life and she adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, Jerold in 2020; six of her siblings; and several of her in-laws.

She is survived by her family who will cherish their memories of her, son, Darwin Zerfoss of Wessington; daughter, Dawn (Kenny) Bailey of Waynesboro, Virginia; six grandchildren, Brandi (Scott) Gilbert of Hitchcock, Jared (Lacey) Zerfoss of Wessington, Brittney Zerfoss and Bailey Zerfoss, both of Huron, and Lauren (Dakota) Hypes and Zane Bailey, both Waynesboro, Virginia; and five great-grandchildren, Tucker, Jaylee and Harley Gilbert and Jeven and Makenna Zerfoss.

Joyce is also survived by her sister, Beth Miller; her in-laws, Lynette Hopkins, Janice (Larry) Arbogast, Janelle Zerfoss and Neil (Jackie) Zerfoss; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Joyce's family would like to express their appreciation for the excellent care given by the staff at the Huron Regional Medical Center during her final days.
