Joyce Watkins, age 76, of Huron, passed away Sunday, July 17, 2022, at Avantara – Huron.
Her funeral service was held at 2:00 PM, Friday, July 22nd at the First United Methodist Church. Burial was in the Riverside Cemetery. Her funeral service was live-streamed through the our website.
Visitation was held from 1:00 to 7:00 PM Thursday at the Kuhler Funeral Home, with her family present from 5:00 to 7:00 PM.
Memorials are preferred to help with her funeral expenses; accounts have been set up at M-O Federal Credit Union and Dakotaland Federal Credit Union.
Joyce Mary Storm was born May 9, 1946, to Walter and Marian (Thiele) Storm at Milbank, South Dakota.
On October 23, 1965, Joyce married William "Bill" Watkins at Milbank, they then moved to Huron.
Joyce was employed for 39 years with Natural Resources Conservation Services. Then for 12 years, she served as the Substitute Coordinator for the Huron Public Schools. She was also a substitute teacher in the Huron School District for the past 14 years.
In 1991, Joyce and Bill opened their family business Formal Expressions, a bridal boutique, limousine service, and tanning salon. They also owned Island Tan, which later merged with Formal Expressions. The formal wear, limousine and tanning business was later renamed Black Tie.
Joyce could always be seen supporting her grandchildren by attending their concerts, swim meets and many other activities.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church. Joyce was also an active sorority member of Laureate Eta, was awarded Girl of the Year and served as the President for some time.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bill on July 14, 2008; her father-in-law, Joseph William Watkins; her mother- and father-in-law, Norma and Merle Fish; and one brother-in-law; David Watkins.
Grateful for having shared in her life are two daughters, Jodi (Todd) Even and Christina (Dan) Jackson, all of Huron; six grandchildren, Jaden Even of Aberdeen, Tristen (Beth) Even of Rapid City, Tarran Even of Sioux Falls, and Jarrett Even, David Jackson and Elizabeth Jackson, all of Huron; two great-grandchildren, Natalie and Hayden; four foreign exchange students, Lianne VanOudenallen of Holland, Christa Blomquist of Finland, Esther Lopez of Spain and Marie Hultin of Sweden; one aunt, Beverly Siede of Eugene, Oregon; one brother, Warren (Ellen) Storm of Huron; one sister-in-law, Kathy (Steve) Watkins-Peschong of Mitchell; her nieces and nephews, Philip (Rebekah) Storm, Christopher (Monica) Storm, Angela Storm, Michelle (Chad) Watkins-Moller and Jeff (Sheena) Watkins; as well as cousins and great nieces and nephews.
Joyce fought hard against breast cancer two times in the past several years. Her fight was over on Sunday, July 17, 2022, as she was welcomed with open arms in to Heaven, at the age of 76 years, 2 months and 8 days of age.
