Johnnie M. Hofer, age 96, passed away Wednesday, October 7, 2020, at Avantara – Huron.
His funeral service was held at 11:00 AM, Monday, October 12th at the Kuhler Funeral Home. Burial was in the Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery.
His funeral service was live-streamed through the Kuhler Funeral Home's Facebook page.
In lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Samaritan's Purse.
Johnnie Melvin Hofer was born October 21, 1923, to Jacob S. and Mary E. (Wipf) Hofer at the family farm, in Beadle County, eighteen miles North of Huron. He attended country grade school and Hitchcock High School.
On March 6, 1945, Johnnie married Elvina Kleinsasser at the Hofer family farm. They had four sons, twin boys, Ronald and Donald; (Donald died shortly after birth); Dennis and Reginald.
Johnnie and Elvina farmed 20 miles North of Huron from 1945 to 1962. In 1962, they moved to the farm where Johnnie grew up. Along with farming corn, oats and wheat, Johnnie and Elvina also milked cows. They milked cows for 40 years, from 1945 until 1985. Johnnie and Elvina retired in 1987, and in 1989 moved to their home on Lawnridge Avenue in Huron. They lived there until 2017, when they moved to assisted living.
When living in Huron, Johnnie worked at UBC Lumber from 1990 until 2004.
Through their 75 years of marriage, Johnnie and Elvina were active members in their church activities at Prairie Bible Church near Carpenter, and at Mt. Olivet Church in Huron. Their faith in God has been a prominent part of their lives.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Donald Hofer; one daughter-in-law, Diana Hofer; one grandson, Jay Ryan Hofer; one great-granddaughter, Alexis White; four brothers and their wives, Jake and Rosie, Eli and Ruth, Dave and Gladys and Martin and VeAnna, one sister and her husband, Mary and Jake Tschetter; one brother Richard; and one sister-in-law, Ruth Hofer.
Grateful for having shared in Johnnie's life are his wife of 75 years, Elvina; their three sons, Ronald of Moore, Oklahoma, Dennis and Janet of Lincoln, Nebraska and Reginald and Julie of Huron; and one brother, Sam of Hitchcock. Johnnie and Elvina were also blessed with grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
