John R. Thompson, age 78, of Huron, passed away Thursday, October 10, 2024, at the Huron Regional Medical Center.

His visitation will be held from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM, Tuesday, October 22 at the Kuhler Funeral Home, followed by a Military honors ceremony at 4:00 PM.

John "Jack" Robert Thompson was born June 24, 1946, to Robert and Joyce (Radke) Thompson at Wessington Springs, South Dakota. He grew up in the Wessington Springs area and attended school there.

On May 10, 1965, John enlisted in the United States Navy.  He was honorably discharged on October 16, 1967. He then moved to Huron, and started working at Huron Manufacturing. Later, John started work at Huron Culvert and Tank, now TruNorth Steel, where he continued for the next 48 years, until his retirement.

John was a member of the American Legion, VFW, Modern Woodmen of America and Congregation United Church of Christ.

John enjoyed hunting and just hanging with his hunting buddies. He enjoyed car shows, cleaning his pickups, and "cowboying stuff up" on his cars. John enjoyed travelling to Sturgis, SD, Omaha, NE, Denver, CO and various other places. One of John's highlights were the many different restaurants he would stop at during his journeys. John was a very good father to his children, Vicki and Curtis. It was said of John that "he always stood by his kids and that he did the very best he could with what he had."

He was preceded in death by his grandparents; his parents; and one brother, David.

Grateful for having shared in his life are one daughter, Vicki Armour of Mitchell; one son, Curtis Thompson of Huron; two grandchildren, Laurie Ann Thompson of Omaha, Nebraska and J.J. Armour (Melonie) of Mound City, Nevada; four great-grandchildren, Cayden, Jayleen, Carter and Marshall; three brothers, Gerald (Judy) Thompson, Duane (Paula) Thompson and Dallas (Nancy) Thompson; and several nieces and nephews.
