Obituary

John Kreyenschmidt, 85, passed away peacefully on February 12, 2025, in Huron, South Dakota.

Born Johann Kreyenschmidt on September 30, 1939, in Westercheps, Germany, to George and Anna (Jasper) Kreyenschmidt, John's life was marked by hard work, dedication, and a deep curiosity for the world around him.

After completing trade school in Germany, where he learned the craft of carpentry, John developed a lifelong passion for working with wood, particularly in hardwood floor sanding. He took great pride in his craft, and it became a cornerstone of his life. At the age of 19, John immigrated to the United States, where he eventually gained citizenship and made Huron, South Dakota his home.

John also proudly served in the South Dakota Army National Guard, demonstrating a strong commitment to his community and country. Outside of work and service, John had an insatiable thirst for knowledge. He loved reading, exploring new places, and always sought to learn more about the world. His zest for life was contagious, and he was known for his warmth and the genuine way he engaged with others. John never met a stranger and found joy in sharing stories from his rich and varied life.

He cherished his family deeply and spoke with great love about his daughter, Jennifer (Chris) Binker of Kingman, Arizona. John is also survived by his sisters, Antje (Karl Heinz) Rhode of Westercheps, Germany, and Linda Devaux of Paris, France.

He was predeceased by his sister, Mariechen (Harold) Steichen, who passed away in 2006 in Woonsocket, South Dakota.

John's legacy of warmth, enthusiasm, and lifelong learning will continue to inspire all who knew him. May his memory bring comfort to those who shared in his journey.
