Joan Campbell, age 100, of Huron, passed away on Friday, October 27, 2023, at Avantara - Huron.

A Christian Memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 AM, Thursday, May 16, at the St. Bernard Catholic Church in Redfield, with inurnment in St. Ann's Catholic Cemetery, Frankfort.

Her memorial visitation was held from 4:00 to 6:00 PM Wednesday, November 8, at the Kuhler Funeral Home in Huron; followed by a Rosary beginning at 6:00 PM.

Joan Sheldon, the daughter of Merritt and Loretta (Robinson) Sheldon, was born on June 18, 1923, in Frankfort, South Dakota. Joan lived for a time on a farm north of Frankfort. When she was four the family moved to a farm east of Frankfort.   Joan graduated from Doland High School in 1941.

Joan married Virgil Campbell on February 4, 1942, at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Doland, South Dakota. The couple made their home northeast of Doland. In 1965, they moved to Frankfort and ran the local gas station and café. They then moved to Redfield where Joan began working as a Med-Aide for the South Dakota Developmental Center until her retirement. The couple returned to Frankfort. Virgil passed away in 1987, and in 2005 Joan then moved to Huron.

Joan was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church in Frankfort and Holy Trinity Catholic Parish in Huron. She enjoyed playing cards and dominoes. Joan loved crocheting and made many tablecloths and doylies.  She also loved attending the various Friday night dances in the area.

Grateful for having shared in Joan's life are her children, James Campbell of Redfield, Gary (Marilyn) Campbell of Lake Norden, Rosemary (Merlyn) Leftzow of Rockham, Cathy (Richard) Jessen of Tulare, Darlene (Darrel) Rohlfs of Watertown and Tom (Jeanie) Campbell of Sioux Falls.

Left to cherish her memory, are her 14 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; 16 great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Virgil; and her siblings, Darrell, Margaret, Elaine, Barbara and Jerry; two grandchildren, Travis and Diedra; one great-granddaughter, Alexa; and special friend, Lyle Newman.
