Obituary

Jeffery Smith, age 62, of Sioux Falls and formerly of Dubuque, Iowa, passed away Sunday, August 16, 2020, at the Huron Regional Medical Center.

Interment with military honors at the Fort Snelling National Cemetery at Minneapolis, Minnesota will be held at a later date.

Jeffery Paul Smith was born August 22, 1957, to Paul and Barbara (Baker) Smith at Cedar Falls, Iowa. At the age of 16, he joined the National Guard and proudly served in Iowa and later in Minnesota, retiring in 2003.

On June 7, 1975, Jeffery married Charlene Hammett at Cedar Falls. To this union three children were born, Sandi, Michael and Jeffery, Jr.

Jeffery worked at John Deere at Waterloo, Iowa, Micro Dynamics at Eden Prairie, Minnesota, General Electric Wind Turbine in southwest Iowa and Rock River, Wyoming, and Georgia Pacific Corporation, retiring on June 30, 2020.

He enjoyed riding motorcycles and was a member of the St. Croix Valley Riders. Jeffery and Charlene spent many summers camping together, beginning in a tent, then moving up to a motorcycle camper, then a pop-up camper, and finally fulfilling his dream of owning a 5 th wheel camper. Along with the camping expeditions, boating, water skiing, grilling and cooking with family and friends was enjoyed.

Shooting in a pool league was a family affair, as Jeffery, Charlene and their son and daughter-in-law, JP and Stephanie, won many awards. He also enjoyed throwing darts.

He cherished the time spent with their eleven grandchildren and one great-grandson. He enjoyed playing ball with their dog, Molly. Jeffery was an avid fan of the Minnesota Vikings and enjoyed watching old movies.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Robbie Loney; his father, Paul Smith; his mother, Barbara Nelson; his brother, Dean Cox; and one grandson, Devin Lee Nelson.

Grateful for having shared in his life are his wife of 45 years, Charlene Smith of Sioux Falls and formerly of Dubuque, Iowa; their three children: daughter, Sandi and Tom Nybo of Marshall, MN; son, Michael and Jade Pince of Mendota Heights, MN and son, Jeffery Jr. and Stephanie Smith of Zimmerman, MN; eleven grandchildren, Darren Nelson, Kayla Nelson and her fiancé, Joe Jackman, Alex Nelson, Dylan Nelson, Eian Pince, Lily Pince, Luca Pince, Josef Pince, James Smith, Sami Smith and Anna Wood; and one great-grandson, Miloh Jackman.

He is also survived by his step-mother, Deann Downs of Waterloo, IA; his siblings, Jennifer and John Taylor of Arkansas, Bill Loney of Faribault, MN, Marie and Al Ford of Faribault, MN and Dana Smith-Katz of Waterloo, IA; and many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
