Iola Huether, age 99, of Huron, died Wednesday, April 6, 2016, at SunQuest Healthcare Center where she was kindly cared for, for four years. Her memorial service was held at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, April 12th, at the Congregational United Church of Christ. The family prefers memorials be directed to the Congregational United Church of Christ.
Iola Dakota Huether was born to Otto and Hattie Tiede at Wessington Springs, South Dakota on August 5, 1916. She attended school there and graduated from High School in 1934. She attended Yankton College for two years, and graduated from a Music Normal course in 1936. She taught in a country school for two years and then in a school in Alpena for two more years.
Iola married Leonard Huether at her parents' home on June 14, 1940. They were married for 64 years. They started married life in Huron, and later moved to a farm close to Wessington Springs for eight years. Two daughters, Nancy and Sandra, were born to them during this time. In 1950, they moved back to Huron and two sons, Rodney and Steve, were born to them then.
Iola was a sixty-year member of Huron Congregational United Church of Christ, and was an active member all of her life. She served as Sunday School teacher, and was on the Diaconate Board. She also was President of the Women's Fellowship group, and held other offices for many years. Iola was a member of the YWCA, and served on the Board. She was a member and Past President of Chapter F, PEO.
Iola was a cancer survivor, and was a volunteer for the Reach to Recovery program. Iola worked for 12 years as a proof-reader for the Huron Daily Plainsman. When she retired, she loved to travel, and did so extensively. Iola was an avid reader and loved to play bridge. She was a former Duplicate Bridge President. Because of her love of reading, she volunteered for the "Friends of the Library" book sales each year.
Iola loved her family and the many friendships that she made throughout the years of her life. She loved life and lived it well.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Leonard; one brother, Leslie Tiede; one sister, Fernella Perman; and one daughter, Sandra McCormack.
Grateful for having shared her life are her children, Nancy (David) Eleeson of Olathe, Kansas, Rodney (Theresa) Huether of Sunnyvale, California, and Steven Huether of San Diego, California; one son-in-law, Ron McCormack of Carmel, California; eight grandchildren, Scott Eleeson, Timothy Eleeson, Kevin Eleeson, Lance McCormack, Meredith McCormack Contreras, Eric Huether, Jake Huether, and Sarah Huether; and thirteen great-grandchildren.
