Obituary

Hazel Rowen, age 90, of Wessington, passed away peacefully at home, Monday, January 10, 2022, with her family by her side. Her husband of 71 years, Lyle, age 90, passed away at home, Wednesday, January 26, 2022.

Visitation for Lyle and Hazel Rowen was held from 2:00 to 4:00 PM, Sunday, January 30 at the Kuhler Funeral Home. Masonic and Eastern Star services was held at 4:00 PM Sunday afternoon.

Their funeral service was held at 10:30 AM, Monday at the First Presbyterian Church, Wessington.  Their service was live-streamed through our website.

Hazel Alice Beach was born December 9, 1931, in Riverside, CA. to Martin Oscar and Harriet Armilla (Jesseph) Beach.  As a baby, Hazel lived with her parents in a tent, when her father worked at Boulder Dam.  Hazel started school in Victorville, CA, she also attended school in San Bernardino, Riverside, Long Beach, San Clemente and Oceanside, CA.  In the fall of 1945, after WWII, her father moved the family to Wessington, SD to build REA lines in this area. As a teenager and coming from Southern California this was indeed a shock, however, she came to love the wide open spaces.  Hazel graduated from Wessington High School in 1950.

On November 12, 1950, she married Lyle Rowen in Wessington, SD.

Hazel belonged to the First Presbyterian Church where she was a Deacon, Elder and Clerk of Session.  She was active in Presbyterian Women, Sunday School teacher and youth group leader. Hazel was a 70+ member of the Order of Eastern Star, serving as Worthy Grand Matron of South Dakota 1981-1982.  She served in the General Grand Chapter, was awarded a special award by order of DeMolay and she was chairman of Eastern Star Home Board.

Hazel is survived by her husband of 71 years, Lyle; and her children, Jeanne (David) Johnsen, Fargo, ND, Marla (Lee) Lichty, Wessington, SD, Lyle, Jr (Rhonda) Rowen, Miller, SD and Glenn (Lesa) Rowen, Wessington, SD.

Hazel will always have a special place in the hearts of her grandchildren, Candice Smith of Locust Grove, GA, Jeff (Sadie) Johnsen of Green Bay, WI, Kellie (Steve) Haaby of Fargo, ND, Heather (Dennis) Nichols of Bennington, NE, Lance (Kirsten) Lichty of Bennington, NE, Megan (Brian) Huizenga of Wessington, SD, Brad Parmely of Highmore, SD, Eric Parmely of Miller, SD, Callie Jo (Lance) Moser, of Wessington, SD, Betsy (Rafael) Clemente of Wessington, SD, Kayti (Robert) Ammerman, Cordova, AK, Stephanie Huntsinger of Wessington, SD, Melissa (Nic) Hentges of Minneapolis, MN, Mallory (Dan) Held of Waconia, MN;  39 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and many dear friends.

Hazel is also survived by four sisters-in-law, Bonnie Beach, Joan Daugherty, Barb (Bob) Lager and Shirley Rowen, and one brother-in-law, Larry (Deanne) Rowen.

Hazel was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Martin Beach; two brothers-in-law Ivan Daugherty and Keith Rowen; great-granddaughter, Anna Hazel Johnsen, 3 nephews Barry Lager, Rick Daugherty and Jay Beach.

Hazel will be remembered by all who have known her for her love of family and friends and a life of service to others. She loved staying in contact with her grandchildren from Alaska to Georgia and states in between.
