Obituary

Gus Carlson, age 91, of Phoenix, Arizonaand formerly of Huron, passed away Saturday, March 16, 2019,at Banner Boswell Medical Center at Sun City, Arizona. His graveside service was held, Saturday, June 8thin the Restlawn Memory Gardens CemeteryMausoleum.
Gus J. Carlson was born on September 1, 1927, at Sheldon, Iowa, to Gus A. and Emma (Menke) Carlson, Sr. He graduated from High School at Canton, South Dakota in 1947. He entered the United States Navy on October 17, 1945, and served as a fireman until July 18, 1946; then returned to high school. Gus was recalled to the Navy on July 22, 1950, and served until October 3, 1951. He then enrolled at South Dakota State University for one year.
Gus was married to Carrol Strahl on February 21, 1954, in Ashton, South Dakota. Following their marriage, they farmed for two years southeast of Sioux Falls. They then moved to Sioux Falls and Gus went to work for the National Bank of South Dakota. He transferred to Huron with the National Bank of South Dakota in 1957. In 1959, he went to work with the South Dakota Bank Examiners. He began working for the F & M Bank in Huron in 1962 until 1982. At that time, he moved to New Mexico and worked at a bank in Alamogordo, New Mexico and later at a bank in Sedona Arizona. They moved to Rapid City and then back to Huron in 1987.
Gus was a member of the First United Methodist Church and he enjoyed golfing, bowling, hunting and fishing. He loved spending time with his family.
Gus is survived by his son and his wife, Kevin and Debora Carlson of Peoria, Arizona; a former daughter-in-law, Laureen "Laurie" and her husband, Alan Gallagher of Phoenix, Arizona; two grandchildren, Christopher and his wife Mary Carlson ofGlendale, Arizona and Andrew Carlson of Mesa, Arizona; and three great-grandchildren, Gavin, Harlan, and Rosalynn Carlson of Glendale, Arizona.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Carrol in 2014; one son, Wayne in 1991; one sister, Ellen Van Bockern; and two brothers, Harlan and Dale Carlson.
