Walter
September 7, 1936 – March 16, 2021
Glenn Walter, age 84, of Carpenter, passed away Tuesday, March 16, 2021, at the Sanford USD Medical Center at Sioux Falls.
His funeral service was held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, March 20th at the Prairie Bible Church, rural Carpenter. Glenn's service will be live-streamed.
Glenn Eugene Walter was born on September 7, 1936, to Sam JM and Katie (Stahl) Walter at Sprague Hospital, Beadle County, in Huron, South Dakota. He was baptized in his faith on October 11, 1957, by Reverend Joseph J. Hofer at Hutterthal Church, now Prairie Bible Church of rural Carpenter, South Dakota.
Glenn was active in 4-H Clubs of South Dakota while growing up, completing numerous courses in tractor maintenance. Glenn graduated from Spink County Schools, receiving his diploma at Redfield, South Dakota. When night courses were offered at Huron High School, specializing in diesel tractor repair and diesel mechanics, Glenn completed each course offered, which started his love of working in the shop. Glenn spent many hours helping neighbors repair their equipment throughout his life.
He joined the South Dakota National Guard at age 19, and continued in service to country which promoted a great deal of pride.
Glenn was united in marriage to June Dianne Weber on July 16, 1959. They were blessed with three daughters, Gerri (Jim) Carter, Tandra (Randy) Smidt and Karen Hofer.
Glenn spent the majority of his life farming in rural Carpenter, first with his father then with his wife, June. They enjoyed many years of planting and harvesting together. After retiring from farming Glenn spent six years at Huron Well Drilling, seeing new places and meeting new people, who became close friends. He enjoyed the years at Huron Well Drilling as he was able to travel to many different states, calling his wife often saying, "You will never guess where I am today".
After Huron Well Drilling closed, he returned to helping neighbors on the farm or with other projects. Most importantly at this time, was the projects he completed with his wife, June in the yard as the farmer in him never changed. He became something of a "Master Gardener". Glenn enjoyed the beauties of God's creation. He was one of the original organizers of the Heartland Consumers Power District and served as the circulator of petitions, which was the first step in creation of the district in December of 1968. He was awarded a certificate of leadership by the East River Electric Power Cooperative in Madison, South Dakota on December 21, 1968.
Glenn is survived by his wife of 61 years, June Walter; his daughters, Gerri and Jim Carter of Marshall, Minnesota, Tandra and Randy Smidt of Webster, South Dakota and Karen Hofer of Aberdeen, South Dakota. He is also survived by his grandchildren and their families, Diane and Bob Lavoie of Rapid City, South Dakota, and their son, Noah; Jeff and Brooke Smidt of Webster, South Dakota, and their children, Rylee and Ronin; Derick and Cherri Hofer of Carpenter, South Dakota, and their children, Kaylyn, Kelsey, Westyn and Wyatt; and Ashley and Shane Croeni of Redfield, South Dakota, and their children, Logan, Carson, Keegan, Allysen and Ruthie.
