Gladys Haggar, age 94, of Huron, passed away Monday, December 24, 2018, at the Sioux Falls VA Medical Center. Her funeral service was held at 3:00 PM, Sunday, December 30th at the Grace Episcopal Church, with military honors conducted by the Huron Veterans Council. Burial was held at 11:30 AM, Monday, December 31st in the Woodlawn Cemetery at Sioux Falls.
Memorials may be directed to the Grace Episcopal Church or to a charity of the donor's choice in memory of Gladys.
Gladys Gebran was born January 26 1924, to Mike and Athena (Bashur) Gebran at Sioux City, Iowa. She graduated from Central High School, Sioux City. In 1944, she enlisted in the United States Navy, serving through the duration of World War II, and honorably discharged May of 1946.
On September 12, 1948, Gladys married John Haggar at Sioux City. They made their home in Sioux Falls until 1958, when they moved their family to Huron. In addition to being a homemaker, she served as bookkeeper for Haggar Produce, assisted the Huron Elks in their comeback from 1977 through 1981 by handling many jobs in the organization. In 1981, Gladys started working for Western Area Power Administration, and retired in 1988.
Gladys was active in the American Legion Auxiliary and Business Professional Womens Club holding many offices. She was also a member of the VFW Auxiliary, Pink Ladies, Huron Area Senior Center, RSVP, Church Women United. She was an active member of the Grace Episcopal Church, serving as secretary to the church women for many years.
Gladys loved people, especially her family. She enjoyed the many get togethers with family at her home or while camping and fishing. She enjoyed playing cards with her friends, especially playing backgammon with John.
She was preceded in death by her son, Gary John, on November 28, 1964, in a hunting accident; her parents; two sister, Patricia Thibodeau and May Fillah; her brother, Oscar Gebran; and her husband, John on July 18, 2015.
Grateful for having shared in her life are her children, Hajjar Gibran "Steve" Haggar of Hilo, Hawaii, Michelle (Keith Broyles) Hanson of Marshall, Missouri, and Carl (Leslie) Haggar of East Glacier, Montana; seven grandchildren, Joel (Jolee) Haggar of Lafayette, Colorado, Maja (Haggar) (Shawn Fultz) Kasdan of Canmore, Alberta, Canada, Brian (Kim) Hanson of Kansas City, Missouri, Patrick (Kristen) Hanson of Columbia, Missouri, Robby (Rachel) Hanson of New Franklin, Missouri, Megan Haggar of Brooklyn, New York, and Mara Haggar of South Korea; and eight great-grandchildren, Ava and Parker Hanson of Columbia, Missouri, Jordan and Jeremy Haggar of Lafayette, Colorado, Kale and Sloane Hanson of Kansas City, Missouri, and Willow and Sequoi Fultz of Canmore, Alberta, Canada.
